I Kill Myself

"Emanations"

Right... so, basically, Harry gets transported to an alien world at the same time a dead body arrives on Voyager. Long story short, Harry has to die to get back to Voyager.

Besides this being the first example of Harry as the 'reset ensign' who can die and come back as often as they please, I've always wondered a couple of things about this episode.

First of all, Hatil's (the alien Harry takes the place of in the death pod) people believe in suicide to keep from being a burden as they get older. Since he escapes to run off to a village to live out the rest of his days, wouldn't he eventually stick out like a sore thumb as the super old guy everyone has to take care of? I mean, eventually, wouldn't he wind up committing suicide anyway?

Also, if I were in Harry's place, I don't think I could do it. Even knowing the Doc could revive me if I got to Voyager fast enough, I think I would try to figure out some way not be killed in the process of being transported. At least trying would make me feel better about the whole thing, anyway.

Could you do it if you were in Harry's place?

The machine itself kills the person inside. There's no other way to use it.

So, it's kill yourself to get home or stay there.

Actually, Hatil said he was a burden because he was disabled--not because he was getting old. And Patera had a malignant brain tumor, so there was a physical reason for her suicide as well.

Between Logans Run and Solient Green, the idea has been out their for a while since the Inuit perfected it,

I'm more concerned about the Prime directive violation.

He smashed a religion while talking about starships and aliens to a conceivably low tech world.

After handing in his report on this adventure, harry should have been off the away team roster FOREVER.

Imagine if instead he travelled back in time to earth and spent his time explaining to a collection of Mormons how wrong they were about some guy living in the clouds granting wishes, and that there is no such thing as magic underwear, until they believed him and closed down all their churches?

It was just bad form.

They couldn't have been that low tech. The technology in the machine had to be somewhat advanced in order to send the bodies as they did to the asteroids of the other planet.

However, yes, it was bad form. I'll agree with that.

I thought it was a natural phenomenon that they'd just put a leash on.

Y'know like on Lost.

Besides, mixing religion and science is just screaming dark ages.

Well, I suppose the Voth?

But that was also religion and politics.

The Voth would deserve their own thread as messed up as that whole situation was.

Still, I'd say even being able to put something like that on a leash would require somewhat advanced tech. I don't think we could do it right now in our stage of technological development.

If only it were that easy...
