It's not a bad show but I assume it gets a lot better right? (No Spoilers Please)

I was running low on shows and looking for something new so I thought the 14 or 15 seasons of Suerpnatural might keep me busy for awhile. And it has such a great reputation that I thought it would be an easy slam dunk. I like it for the most part but I'm just not knocked out by it.

The scripts are pretty good and take standard ghost stories and add a few twists to them but sometimes I get a "rejected X-Files script" vibe from them. The weakest one so far was the Wendigo episode where they clearly couldn't afford to show the monster very much.

The two leads are both decent actors but they don't seem to have much chemistry with each other. Also, other than occasionally mentioning that they're looking for their dad or that one of the guy's girlfriend died, there doesn't seem to be a lot of ongoing story lines. I assume that's just because it's so early in the show and they want to spend several episodes setting the tone.

Another thing that kind of bugs me is the logistics of their adventures. One is that they fund their travels through credit card scams. It's not that I feel bad for the credit card companies, it's just that it seems like that method would have tons of issues. Seems like it wouldn't take too long for them to get caught. Also, wouldn't they need to keep re-applying for new cards al the time? And wouldn't they need to keep checking their mail at home? And do either of them even have a home address? It just doesn't seem like a sustainable way of adventuring.

The other part that bugs me is that people sure do seem super cooperative with two strangers who enter their lives suddenly and are clearly lying about being park rangers or whatever. Usually, it's something like, "I don't know you guys and I just experienced something incredibly traumatic but, sure, I'll answer some questions. Come in to my home and let me show you some old photo albums." I'd like to see the boys have some actual reason for doing what they do and some reason for people to be ok with cooperating with them.

But all in all it's pretty good so far. Even if it doesn't get much better I'll still give it a few seasons before I decide to bail out. I'll update this thread as I go, but I average about 1 episode per week so it'll take some time.

The first season is a pretty generic "ghost hunter" series--and many of the episodes were quite poorly done. I remember being surprised that it even got renewed for a second season. Yes, it does get better and really finds its footing in the third season. Also, seasons 6 and 7 following the initial five year arc were pretty lame as well.

I quit watching at some point as I felt I had seen enough and the seasons were so long and had too much filler. It wasn't that I hated it, I just thought that 20 hour chunk every season could be better spent on something else.

It is a primarily episodic show with season arcs similar to Smallville and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Remember that shows like Lost were an anomaly at the time. Personally I think that 20 season shows are better that way as I tend to lose interest if the season plot doesn't interest me. This year's season of Supergirl lost me early on, for example.
