I just started watching Lost, impressions...

...and I'm liking it a great deal! Honestly the first season felt a little slow at times, to me, but the second season seems to have really kicked into gear and seems to deal more with the "mythos" I've heard that surrounds the show.

I'm currently on the episode "Collision" and I must say... Ana Lucia is horrible. I mean, Sawyer in season one was one thing but she's something else. She's outright unstable. And killing Shannon? I'm really hoping something happens to her actually.

Honestly I've come upon a few spoilers by accident... something about Locke becoming the leader of The Others, the Oceanic Six being the six people who leave the island...

So how does the show continue on from here? I'm not asking about spoilers or anything, just the general direction it goes. I've heard things about time travel, the 1970's... I take it it's worth sticking with?

General themes for each season....
Season 1: The Crash
Season 2: The Hatch
Season 3: The Others
Season 4: The Freighter
Season 5: The Dharma Initiative

LOST is the greatest TV show of the past decade or so and it's definitely worth sticking with! My favorite seasons are the Third and Fifth so far.

One thing I love about Lost is it has a nice subtle way of sucking you into sci-fi/fantasy. It starts off with a couple of random weird things, while you focus on a compelling story and interesting characters. That it builds up the action and adventure, while still focusing on the characters, and adding more weird stuff. It slowly answers the questions that build, so you don't get frustrated, but adds new ones to keep you watching.

By the time the show nears completion, you wonder what will happen to the characters as well as answers to the major questions. Hopefully the last season is a satisfactory end to both the characters and the mystery of the show.

When the series debuted, one of my main hopes was that the island would not turn out to be disappointingly mundane, but rather would keep being fascinating and increasingly mind-blowing as the truth about it was revealed. That has paid off in spades!

The general direction is to get wilder and definitely more solidly sci-fi, to continue to build on the mythos (the history of the island, Dharma, the Others, etc) and to YES! answer questions while still leaving some big'uns for the future.

By S2, I recall that the characters had not entirely gelled as a group yet. By the end of S5, they most definitely have, but it's hard to say exactly when it occurred.

Also, the writers continue to weave new characters into the story and some of them have become my favorites. Of course this means that other characters must leave the story in various ways, and the writers aren't always obvious about which ones will be doing the leaving, or how...

It starts to get more complex, but not too complicated.

If you're the kind of person that's enjoying season 2 more than season 1..then I think you'll really like what's coming up.

Personally, Season 3 was a bit of a stinker because of the whole kay, say and jay in a cay thing which went on FOREVER.

Season 4 otoh is one of LOST's best imo, and Season 5 carried on this improvement as their building towards a BIG ending.

Stick with it, because im sure theyre building towards one hell of a payoff in the finale, even though none of us have a clue what it is yet :p

I know what you mean about the start of season 3. I watched it on DVD and it seemed like a lot...it must have seemed even longer for those watching it on TV week by week! Still, not bad as a storyline, but drawn out too long.

It was even worse than you might think. The first six episodes were aired as a sort of mini-season in the fall of that year. Then we were left with that storyline almost, but not completely, resolved until episode seven aired in February. It was more than a bit frustrating.

Of course, given the rest of the series, I'm more than willing to forgive a few slow episodes.

I didn't mind the opening of S3 at all. At that point the show, glacial movements were the norm. So them being in cells for six episodes was par for the course. My only complaint is they really should have aired 7 with the first 6 since THAT is one complete story with a proper resolution.

I remember being anxious to get on the with show during those first 6 of 3. Watching on DVD, however, was a much better experience as they flowed and passed nicely. I enjoyed them much more.

Season 1 - Excellent
Season 2 - Very Good but missed that little extra kick that S1 had
Season 3 - After the first 6 episodes, its totally breathtaking
Season 4 - Very Good bordering Excellent
Season 5 - Very Good bordering Excellent

Dam this show is so good.

LOST is a great show and well worth sticking with. And I think it is especially great to watch on DVD because you don't have to deal with all of those long breaks and such. I myself started watching about 5 - 6 months ago and was caught up by the time the show reached the middle of season 5 on TV. Now I have to wait along with everyone else and I don't like that - I like being about to watch 4 episodes at a shot because you simply cannot stop.

This is by far one of the most addictive shows I've ever watched. Even with my favorite shows like DS9 and B5, I can watch 2 or in VERY rare instances, 3 episodes at a stretch and then I'm done - ready to go and do something else. But not with LOST. I think I once watched like 5 episodes in one afternoon/evening - the most episodes of ANY show I've EVER watched in a single day.

I think my favorite season is probably season 3, followed by season 4. But really, they are all good, IMO. And it is really fun to watch the mystery unfold. We know a fair amount now compared to what we knew in the beginning...but there is still alot of mystery left on this Island and I can't wait for season 6.

Thanks for the responses everyone! All of these enthusiasm behind the series makes me want to plow through the DVD's even more!

I'm interested to see if your opinion of Ana-Lucia by the ending of Collision.

This was the last episode I saw, and I can't stand her. She's obviously very unstable and just seems like she's going to give all of the people on the island unnecessary trouble, or get herself or someone else killed.

^ In the interests of not spoiling anything for you, all I'll say to that is "YES".

But I wouldn't worry too much about Ana Lucia. In the long run she is not what I would call a dominant character on the show. She has her place and purpose for being there....but she is by no means a major factor in how things turn out in the long run.

By the way...did you come to the realization that Jack is an idiot yet? For many viewers, Jack is the hero for a while, then you realize that he bascially never makes a right decision.
That and he looks like he's going to cry at the drop of a hat.

Ah, season 2. When I was first watching the series I burnt through all of 2 and 3 when I had just over a week off work, and I really needed another fix after I'd finished an episode. I've been the series after 5 finished, and I have to say that rewatching season 2 was a bit harder, knowing everything that happens. And I'll leave it vague! :p

It remains my least favourite season, yet it's still highly enjoyable. I've nearly finished watching season 3 again, which is just a big step up from 2, and then 4 ups the ante even more, which I just didn't think would ever happen. They keep the momentum going into season 5 too so you really have a lot left to look forward to. :)

I actually stopped watching for a while after those six episodes, I'd just stopped caring.

And then various friends convinced me to pick it back up, and am I ever glad of that. ;)

Same here. Stopped watching after the first 1/3 or 1/2 of season 3. Couldn't take it any more. I've sense bought the entire series on DVD and watched it again (then watched season 5 on DVR). A lot of the problems I had with this show aren't as apparent when watching episodes back to back. I agree that Lost is one of the best TV shows of recent history, but it just isn't a show that watches easy as a weekly format for me. Too often the writers drag stuff on just to add suspense. And everything stays fresh in my mind when I can watch the season in a short period of time, because this is definitely a show that requires that you pay close attention.
