I just heard some very pleasant news

For several years my 86 year old uncle (my late father's older brother) has been legally blind. He certainly had very poor eyesight when my father died back in 2004.

My aunt died last December. 3 weeks later, on what would have been their 60th wedding anniversary, my uncle and the rest of us spread my aunt's ashes around her beloved garden. My uncle had to be helped my his daughter because he couldn't see the garden.

A few days ago my uncle had a fall and was admitted to hospital. He had to have stitches to his head and the doctors tested his heart to see if he had an underlying condition that could be behind the fall. Yesterday he was told his heart was fine and that he could go home today.

During his last night in hospital my uncle felt a pop in his head and all of a sudden he could see. The doctors are rather mystified why this has happened but we are all overjoyed.

I have been searching the net for similar cases to my uncle's.

One woman was totally blind but regained 80% vision in one eye after hitting her head

But that all changed after she kissed her beloved guide dog Ami last November.
Now, anybody who keeps a Labrador in the house knows that there's no such thing as a deftly-executed-dog-kiss. When you pucker for your pooch, you're opening yourself up to all sorts of hazards and liabilities including, but not limited to: abrasions, a black eye, minor concussion, and of course momentary respiratory difficulties associated with drowning.
Nobody knows exactly what happened that night when Ms. Reid went to give Ami a bedtime kiss, but somehow the woman ended up conking herself on the melon pretty hard.
"I kind of lost my balance," she says. " hit my head on the floor and coffee table at same time."
The following morning, Ms. Reid awoke to a miracle. She recalls: "I just saw the white of my ceiling. Looking around my room… the light shining through the curtains… the window frame… Looking at Ami. She's just beautiful."

Story here

and this guy was blinded in one eye as a result of an explosion aboard his ship when he was serving in the Navy in 1942. 64 years later he was head-butted by a horse and got some vision back in his blind eye.

It seems to me that if "percussive maintenance" was enough to partially fix the eyesight, then a doctor should have been able to do it even better with a bit of surgery.

That's terrific!

If you think he's up to it, show him all the photos of him and your aunt that you took after his eyes went bad, that he's never seen.

And tell him how much you loved her.

I've got a brother who can see perfectly, but he's an idiot.

If I head-butt him with a horse, do you think he would start seeing what a fuckup he is?

Joe, anti-bro

I am so pleased for him! I've just told my husband, too, and he's pleased for your uncle as well. :)

Oh my, that's amazing!!!!!
I'm so happy for your uncle and all your family! What a miracle!
Great news! Continued All-the-best wishes to him!

That's incredible, what a lovely story!

By the way, you have a call from Princeton Plainsboro...
