I just got carded at Walmart...

I got carded yesterday buying compressed air to clean the dust out of my hard drive...

Weird--I was carded a while ago for buying compressed air too! The ones I bought were the cartridge kind for a whip cream dispenser.

A few weeks back, when getting carded for a bottle of beer, the clerk asked me if I had a current ID. Manager OK'ed the purchase (I'm 23), but it was a startling way to be informed that my driver's license had expired a few months ago. Shook me out of that mood to drink beer until I got it taken care of.

What was relay scary is if I'da got caught going 80 in a 70 zone on I5 through Sacramento a few weeks prior. Speeding ticket on an expired licence probably woulda hurt big time!

^^ That happened to me too.. Although in my case, I was denied purchase.. To make matters worse, in New Mexico, we have these private MVD contract businesses that issue licences and registrations, etc... They are usually a quick way to avoid long MVD lines at state-run offices..

Well, they no longer issue permanent cards, but give you a temporary until the state mails you the real thing.. They are supposed to give you the expired card back (I didn't know this at the time) to use as back up when ID is required for a purchase...

Well, they kept my old license and much to my chagrin, the next time I went to buy beer, they asked for the old license too. Since I didn't have it, I was yet again denied purchase.. Needless to say, the business got a stern email from me and I was refunded my service charge...

How long do your licenses last? 23 seems like a weird age to have an expired license, unless you never got your new one when you turned 21.

IIRC, California licenses are 5 years and 16/17 year olds have graduated licenses that don't permit some things. So having it expire at 23 makes sense. Actually more sense than driver's license expiration dates over here do if you ask me.

Except that 16 + 5 = 21.

We have the same thing in Illinois. You get an underage license at 16, and then you have to get a new one when you turn 21. An underage license, even if you are over 21, is not valid for the purchase of alcohol.

I think in this case the implication is that the upgraded license would be obtained at 18.

Fortunately, the one time I was carded while over there (One of the Bars we visited), I had my passport.

The times I had to show my driving licence for other purposes in the US had the people checking it go :wtf:
(It's one of the older UK ones that expires when you're 70 and has no photo)

The lack of photo would immediately result in me saying, "I'm sorry, I can't sell that to you."

Yep. When I worked in a convenience store, there was one guy who came in with an ID and the photo portion was mangled. I told him I couldn't sell beer unless he could show me a valid photo ID. He ranted and raved for about 5 minutes until the owner came out, saw the ID, and told him the same thing. No valid picture, no beer.

My favorite is always, "Aw man, I left my ID in the car! I look old enough, right?"

Maybe you do, maybe you don't. Maybe you're a cop trying to bust me for serving alcohol to a minor. I'm not taking the risk.

I also want to know: why would you bring your wallet inside with you, but leave your ID in your car? Why isn't your ID in your wallet?

Target was closed. The only reason I ever go to Walmart is because it's too late to go anywhere else. It was a Sunday night, so other places were closed even earlier than normal.

I don't know how it was for you, but every time I got the "I left my ID in my car/at home" excuse, I always said no, and it always ended up being an undercover cop.

And I couldn't and wouldn't blame you. I'm almost surprised that places here in the UK have accepted it in the past as proof of ID. What's to stop me accidentally using another persons if I pick up the wrong one.

Haven't got around to getting one of the newer photo drivers licences and those are time limited I believe (Not sure if it's five or ten years). I've got my passport if it really becomes necessary.

Yeah, I gave her a weird look and then slowly pulled out my ID. She studied it way too carefully.
I did, but it didn't have my age or birthday on it.

Did it have your phone number on it? :p

That is a little odd, but I probably would've been flattered. I seldom even get carded for alcohol anymore -- it makes me feel old. :(

Are you a white? If not, they may not- I've only been carded once for alcohol- and it was super dark. (-and it was the second drink I'd gotten in the place, the first drink they gave me I'm pretty sure didn't even have alcohol in it, even tho I paid for alcohol...:vulcan:)

Well, I've never been busted, so I have no idea if they're cops or not. Nobody tells us.

Some people get so pissed off when you ask for their ID. It blows my mind. It especially blows my mind when the person is, like, 22 or 23. "God, you seriously need my ID?" *scoff*
