I just can't say no to a Girl Guide...

You ever wonder why almost every electronic/cellphone retail store has at least one late teen to early twenty something pretty but not too pretty female working there?

Next time you are in such a store take some time and observe them, they work like a pied piper on men to get them to buy stuff, and buddy up with the female shoppers.

They have a unique position within the retail community, and I think it starts with the Girl Scouts and their fund-raising activities.

Geez, I read "Girl Guide" and immediately thought "Escort Directory".

Girl scouts, oh. Carry on.

Sorry.

Weird coincidence though, since today I found out that a friend of a friend used to be a professional escort.

(And no, I didn't find out by booking them. My life isn't a sitcom. Well, not completely.)

I never understand why that is such a "big" revelation, really.

In theory, no it isn't, I agree. But in this particular case, it just seems so incongruous with her current profession.

One should never judge a person simply by their job... Remember Einstein once worked as a patent clerk. ;)

It's interesting that you point out for the Americans what a GirlGuide is, but fail to point out what a Tesco is.

I read somewhere it's like a Wal-mart.

I'm not a Universal Translator. :D

(Wal-Mart actually owns Tesco's largest competitor in the UK, ASDA. Tesco is bigger, but the two of them enjoy quite the rivalry.)

I'm a bastard. I have no problem saying "no" to little kids that are selling things. Maybe it comes from parenting.

Tesco does Airmiles on it's rewards card, and is therefore one billion times better.

And their wine range is much better, with far better and more regular deals. This is the most important aspect of any supermarket. Fact.

No argument here; my flights to Mauritius in January are paid for with Airmiles, partly thanks to Tesco.

Compared to ASDA, sure, Tesco's is generally better (although ASDA's Taste the Difference buyer is not bad). But Tesco woefully under-represents good Riesling, Gewurz and claret which are three of my favourites so I can't score it too highly. In terms of supermarket wine, Waitrose is comfortably my favourite - very reliable picks, some interesting occasional bottles and generally fairly-priced. Tesco does have some great deals at times though, esp. when it comes to bubbly.
