I hope they use the stun setting a lot more

I watched the great DS9 episode last night in which Bashir and O'Brien link their brains with Section 31's operative Sloane in an effort to retrieve the cure for the disease that's killing Odo. Sorry, can't think of the title. Anyway, when Bashir lures Sloane to DS9, he stuns him almost immediately upon capture. What a tactically sound manuveur! In so many other episodes of Trek, the main characters, armed with phasers already set to stun, draw down on the bad guys but hesitate just long enough for the baddies to fight back and either escape or get the upper hand. Weak!! While there may be a few other similar instances, it was hardly the norm. What's wrong with "Stun first, ask questions later?" They don't cause longlasting after effects, which is quite a noble concern, especially when dealing with armed and hostile beings.

In STXI, I want to see Spock immediately stun an adversary rather than try to reason with him. When Kirk looks at him quizzically, Spock replies stoically, "It was the logical thing to do.":vulcan:

The tagline for the new movie should be: STUN 'EM ALL AND LET SPOCK SORT THEM OUT!

Agreed. Scatter the atoms to the Antares Maelstrom and back! Stunning is for 60's librul sissies.

/sarcasm, in case anyone cared and/or noticed.

Not sure if this counts as on topic, but i'll say it anyway. What always bothered me is that whenever there were large groups of people around, there was always an effort put into not shooting innocent people. But since the phasers are almost always set to stun, there's no real harm in shooting the innocent. Granted, they won't enjoy being hit by the phaser, but they'll live without injury.

Which is because there's actually no such thing as a "harmless" weapon that can render someone paralyzed or unconscious. Human beings aren't machines that function predictably and that have on/off switches that work reliably.

I just really hope that if they use "stun" in the movie, it's a bright green flash rather than a typical "beam." Ya know, a green strobe flash like TOS used...

I always thought that if the Enterprise had the ability to stun entire groups of people (TOS: A Piece of the Action), then perhaps they should use that ability more often to get themselves out of trouble...

...but alas, there is a thing called "Dramatic License".
