I watched the great DS9 episode last night in which Bashir and O'Brien link their brains with Section 31's operative Sloane in an effort to retrieve the cure for the disease that's killing Odo. Sorry, can't think of the title. Anyway, when Bashir lures Sloane to DS9, he stuns him almost immediately upon capture. What a tactically sound manuveur! In so many other episodes of Trek, the main characters, armed with phasers already set to stun, draw down on the bad guys but hesitate just long enough for the baddies to fight back and either escape or get the upper hand. Weak!! While there may be a few other similar instances, it was hardly the norm. What's wrong with "Stun first, ask questions later?" They don't cause longlasting after effects, which is quite a noble concern, especially when dealing with armed and hostile beings.
In STXI, I want to see Spock immediately stun an adversary rather than try to reason with him. When Kirk looks at him quizzically, Spock replies stoically, "It was the logical thing to do."
The tagline for the new movie should be: STUN 'EM ALL AND LET SPOCK SORT THEM OUT!
