I hope Star Trek comes back to TV someday.

This, would be the highlight of my life! Tonight I was watching TOS's "I, Mudd" on TV and I was thinking I really do miss weekly Star Trek. Even if the last series were Voyager and Enterprise. Each series always had cool technology, awesome storylines, and good entertainment. The only show I find that remotely comes close to this is The Big Bank Theory. If they do come out with a new series I really hope they don't ruin the franchise. While I found Abram's Trek Universe enjoyable to watch, I still find old Trek to be the best. Please Paramount, let us have new Trek TV :)

Maybe one day. Maybe not.

TNG was pretty profitable for them. I still think they haven't figured out the formula yet. Us as fans know, but not the powers-that-be.

Soon as they figure it out, we will have another five to seven year run of a decent Star Trek TV series. (hopefully)

Maybe one day, Johnny, soon. Maybe soon.

Please, uncle Bob. I love Star Trek.

OK, Johnny. I promise. Merry christmas, merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ha, ha, ha...

Wait a minute. That wasn't Santa Claus. He stole my Star Trek tapes. That was his evil greedy twin in the alternate universe again.

Look, Johnny, the bad guys won again.

Aww..!

And thus ends another episode of Johnny wants his Star Trek back one day with his two front teeth.

That's my big bank business theory.

I think there will be a Star Trek series, but probably not until after current CBS chief Les Moonves retires. He seems happy with the way things presently are (allowing Paramount to sink millions into new Trek movies while CBS sits back and collects their cut from licensing the property).

I loved the last movie - I just wish they'd get a move on with the next one, and allow the post-STXI novels to be released (and have more written) to tide me over in-between.

If they do a new series, it can't just be another Voyager/Enterprise-style rehash of TNG-style Trek.

Agree with the Moonves comment. I don't think there will be any Trek on TV while he is there.

Certainly not prime time or live action, but I suspect we'll get a new kids' cartoon series if Star Trek 2/XII does well. But I suspect it'll be more of a Stargate Infinity than a ST: TAS.

Actually, don't Abrams's cohorts work on the current Transformers animated series? I don't watch it, but I imagine another animated Trek would probably be similar to that.

And I don't doubt some day there will be another live action series, hopefully set in the 25th century of the prime timeline, though it could also (and most likely will) be a brand new timeline completely.

It will be back. With all the remakes of old TV series being made (next up, The Munsters), why would Star Trek be any different?

The biggest holdup is that space opera as a genre has vanished from TV, which doesn't instill a lot of confidence in a new Star Trek series among the people who have control over it.

But sf/f does well on cable - Falling Skies, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones are all significant hits - so sooner or later, someone will have the guts to try bringing back Star Trek. It may be very different from what we're used to, especially if it ends up someplace like Showtime or The Cartoon Network.

Don't ask Paramount, ask CBS.

TNG was a long time ago, and the TV biz has changed utterly. If there's a successful approach (and there probably is), it won't be much like TNG.

Why don't you try some fan made series ?
Ok, there is still flaws in the actors play and they're obviously on budget, but I've found that to be quite impressive, at least for some of them. And even if it's not what you expect from a Star Trek show, I'm pretty sure you'll find some good stories in it.
What makes me thought that Star Trek is as good or even better on paper than on TV. There is much more place to develop everything our nerdy minds wants to discover.

"The Big Bang Theory"? How is that remotely similar to Star Trek? TBBT isn't even the best sitcom on TV, never mind TV show.

Ive always felt that one of the biggest positives of trek is that the actors bring so much characterisation. You'd get a strong character from the writers, and the actors would really sink their teeth in and define it. Also, I dont want to sound like a dick here, I cant get over how poor the writing is in the novels...

I hope it comes back, too. I love Star Trek. It was my first obsession...that and reptiles. [chuckle] I watched TNG over and over again for about 5 years...and then they came out with DS9, which seems to be everyone favorite. ( My neighbor is a DDS9 fan and so is my brother in law. My neighbor even had DS9 folder with a picture of the station.) At first I was a little hessitant about it, but really got into the whole story on the station and the characters and became very addicted to it.

No, that's pretty fair. You need to hear the actors saying the lines, and you're right in my opinion, about the novel-writing. I want to like the novels, more, I really do. I try one (or a huge trilogy last Christmastime) and just don't like them very much. Not wanting to sound snobby, but there it is.

I can't really give my opinion since English is not my mother tongue. However, it's obvious it doesn't look like some Nobel prize winner's masterpierce. I'm reading numbered books from DS9 and TNG, and it just seems to be some kind of sequels and extra episodes, which are often quite nice to read but only for a trekkie.
Perhaps it gets better in the recent works ? What about the DS9 relaunch novels for example ?

How many did you try? And by different authors, or the same? The hit/miss ratio's about the same as the episodes, IMO. Imagine how much of a Trek fan you'd be today if the first Trek episode you saw was "And the Children Shall Lead" or "The Way to Eden"...:ack:

True. Ive tried flipping through quite a lot that ive found in charity shops (one near me has hundreds of the things) and comic book-y places. Ive found them all pretty bad, the authors never quite seem to get the characters and the writing is stilted and tedious.

Ill admit that im kind of an elitist when it comes to literature, but why shouldnt the novels look like a nobel prize winner's masterpiece. Obviously, in the last decade or so, Trek has been taken over in terms of quality by shows like The Sopranos and Six Feet Under. Before that though, and in my opinions before VOY, it must be remembered that Trek was a serious show that had a profound impact on television and really was one of the best things to come out, both in the early years of tv (TOS) and latter on (DS9). There just wasnt much that could top it in terms of storytelling.

So I think its fair to reject the novels for not being up to scratch.

I'm sure there will be a new series by 2016.

Possibly 2013 to tie into Trek XII.

More likely 2016 to tie into Trek XIII and the 50th anniversary. By then it will have been 11 years since Enterprise ended, more than enough time to have given the franchise a break.

This is assuming the next movie/s are as successful as the last one.

Both Treks (1966, 1987) were instigated by a person who wanted to tell stories with a certain outlook in general, who found companies that would partner with him.

A new iteration of Trek would be a corporation wanting to put out some product with a Trek brand name. Who knows what it would be like? I would welcome a show that, to me is Trekkish, even if said show were not in the Star Trek franchise. But not some generic action show that merely has the name Trek stamped on it, or using certain tech terms or ship names.
