I heard a rumour...

Wheo

Red Shirt
Specifically, that, whether the new movie does well or not, there will never be another movie or television series (animated or otherwise). I don't think I believe this (especially considering the source...), but I'm still wondering if it could be true, nonetheless.

I believe that the actors have all been signed on for three more movies.

Never is a word that does not exist in Hollywood.

Hmmm..how many times have Shatner/Nimoy heard that rumor???

If this movie does well, then they will probably make a couple of sequels. A TV series depends on the demand for one after the second sequel IMO.

I think it would have done better in the winter movie season....

May is not the place for star trek.... tho i'll be suprised if it does really well. Its got big competition.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - May 1, 2009
Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins

That's total balls. If the new film does well, there will certainly be sequels; the principle cast all signed three-film contracts (though I think that's starting to become de rigueur in Hollywood these days, at least where the sci-fi/fantasy and action/adventure genres are concerned).

If it fails, there will be no new Trek for an indeterminate number of years, but not "never." At some point in the future, some Paramount exec looking for a movie to fill their schedule, or a new TV show to pitch to the networks during pilot season will remember "that old TV show about the people on the spaceship, and that dude with the pointed ears." It may not come back looking like Trek as we know it, but there's too much money potential to let it die forever.

I've heard this as well - if the movie makes $600 million dollars, they are going to throw a "farewell" party and call it a day.

When hearing rumours, the first question to ask is as follows? "does it bear any relationship to reality as I understand it".

So ask yourself the following - is Paramount - a commercial organisation looking to make money going to shut the door on a vast money making franchise if it makes money?

Answers on a postcard....

Ah, yes, I agree with you all. I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about the new movie (right now all I feel is apprehension, at this point), but what I most look foward to is the possibility of a new series afterwards (be it in one year or twenty ^_^;). I hope for the best in the Star Trek fandom, of course! ^_^

If this new movie makes profit, and it will...

There will be more Trek movies from Paramount. But for those wanting a new Trek, don't be looking at the last 40 years as assurance there will be a new 40 years.

As far as TV goes, that's in the hands of CBS. And I don't believe CBS is interested in Trek.

Ah, as depressing as that sounds, you're probably right (in regards to more television series). I think it could work out, but yeah, I doubt the people who matter really care about that right now. That's the main reason I'm hoping the movie does well- I want more television Trek.

It's going to bomb. so it doesn't matter.

Nice crystal ball... do you have any lottery numbers I can use?

Paramount and those who produced this movie surely didn't go into it with the notion that it would be a 'bomb'. Just because it doesn't conform to some expectations of what a "Star Trek movie should be" in no way follows it will be a failure. That some 'fans' are so sure of this actually indicates to me likely the opposite is true.

^ I'm sure the same was said about Nemesis.

To be I'm not entirely sure of how well this will go over still. Trek is not looked favorably upon by the target demographic of the film (teens and young adults) and seeing these films is considered geeky. Case in point when I was in High School a friend and I went to see Nemesis in the theatre. I don't particularly care about popularity contests but he was incredibly popular and was the Quarterback of our football team. When Nemesis was over we were leaving the theatre and a group of kids from our school spotted us coming out of the theatre after seeing it. Within two hours he went from most popular to one of the least popular in our school and was labelled a geek. Media supports the geeky stereotype in shows like Family Guy and American Dad where the parents are portrayed as being Trek fans (Peter Griffin says Star Trek is his favorite show; Stan Smith says he likes all Treks but DS9) but are critical of their children for having an interest in the show (Stan Smith is best for this is relation to his son's character Steve). Things like this have me a little worried for the success of the new film and any new series since they are gearing it more for general audiences than fans. Plus the price tag of the film gives me concern because they'll need a lot of ticket sales to recover what they spent.

In short I wouldn't be surprised. I wonder how the remake in 25 - 30 years will go...

For a new TV series, CBS and not Star Trek's popularity is the problem.

Unless of course CBS is allowed to call it CSI:StarTrek, Survivor:StarTrek or Big Brother at the Academy.

I fear that after what CBS did to StarTrek.Com, they aren't the least bit interesed in a new Trek series.

I dunno. Money talks. If the movie makes, like Iron Man money (not saying it will/not saying it won't -- just saying), I can see CBS more interested in a Trek series (although, they might wait until a sequel is made to see if it wasn't a fluke).

Agreed. As long as Paramount or CBS believes Trek can make a profit they will develop it.

I do wish that CBS would sell the rights to another broadcasting company though.

CBS isn't the problem. "Star Trek's" popularity is the problem.

Trek doesn't draw audiences of sufficient size or the desired demographic to make it viable on anything other than a niche channel like SCIFI right now.
