I have a holodeck question or two

Grandpa Picard's a late adopter of "unnecessary" entertainment technology.
This does seem pretty likely. Picard grew up with a luddite father and then spent most of his life on the frontier in crummy old starships.

He probably considered holosuites rather gauche and saw no need for them. He had books and music, and was above the 24th century Idiot's Lantern.

Given how difficult it was to convince him to take a holiday, this would be characteristic stubbornness for Picard.

does anyone remember the episode in season one where the holodeck is malfunctioning and some people are stuck in there, and someone says they are worried what would happen if they try to shut off the power to the holodeck because the people stuck in there might "disappear" ? 😆😆😆

"The Big Goodbye," yes. Wesley said, "If this isn't done correctly, the program could abort and everyone inside could vanish." Not entirely unreasonable, since the holodeck uses transporter/replicator technology to create and remove physical props. Given that they didn't know the nature of the malfunction, it was conceivable that the transporter could dematerialize the people as well as the props. Though that does seem a rather unlikely risk that they exaggerated for the sake of drama.

So that never actually happened in an episode or story?
no, I mean, I just read the holodeck as set dressing, deadly set dressing if the safety protocols are removed or whatever. I mean anything is possible with a malfunctioning ship that can transport you out into deep space if it wants to or rearrange your atoms into a cheesecake. But the general idea of the holodeck has been shown as leaving participants standing in an empty room when the thing shuts off

There have been so many holodeck malfunctions that I would think a malfunction of the "delete/re-process replicated physical objects" setting could happen.

I mean, "Spirit Folk" did establish that you can use holographic bullets to disable the safeties...(ducks)
