I HATE soft water!

Having lived in hard (ok, VERY hard) water regions all my life, I much prefer the taste of hard water, and agree with the comments about feeling cleaner after washing in it. The need to use a fair bit of washing powder in the machine is annoying though. As is the limescale build-up on the shower glass, etc, etc.

On balance though, the taste and feel issues probably outweigh the negatives for me.

What a bunch of whiners.

Where I grew up the hardness of the water was irrelevant. What mattered was its existence. Water was so precious that we wore special suits that recycled it from our sweat, and we even collected water left in the bodies of the dead. When we weren't evading giant sandworms we would sit in the sietch staring at our few precious literjohns.

God, save us from Herbert fan.

How did you get the Spice if you were dodging sandworms, though?

We didn't actually harvest the spice. That was done by "undocumented workers" - the illegal aliens working for the Harkonnens.

I have never spent much time in soft water regions (Limestone mines all around here), but I have never suffered from it when I have.

You bet. I was sietch steward for Freman's Local 548.

Our demands were constant. "More water." "More water." "More water."

It got irritating even to us, though. Sometimes you needed to summon a worm and even though we all carried thumpers, we couldn't use them. We'd have to wait hours for a journeyman in the thumpers union to show up, then carefully watch for wormsign so we could make sure the worm wouldn't arrive while the guys with the worm hooks were on break.

ETA: Anyway, back to the point. Chani used to ask Maud'dib about Caladan, saying "Tell me about the water on your world."

Maud'dib would reply, "The water on my world was too soft. When I'd bathe in it my skin would feel all soapy and I'd have to scrub myself dry with a towel. It really sucked."

And Chani would get mad and scream "F**k you in the a** with a crysknife, you f**king c*nt p**sy"
