I hate all the racially correct places Trek visits

Yet modern Treks don't have people from Russia, India, etc. in their casts. Haven't they seen what the science departments look like at universities?

trek is just as guilty as all modern television in showing the PC version of reality instead of the truth.

In regards to accents, I'd like to see more of the non-Anglo-Germanic variety. Perhaps we can see more southern Europeans - in fact any at all would be nice.

I appreciate Star Trek because of it's forward thinking, somewhat Utopian view of the future. Peace, stability, prosperity, and scientific advancement are worthy goals for many societies. When we want to watch distressed societies, traumatized by war and civil strife, we can still find that cup of tea. 'Course, you have to wait a long time between seasons. :)

I liked Trek when Humanity still had a lot to learn from the mistakes of others (TOS) more than when Humanity became the universal authority on what to DO and NOT DO. (TNG).

It's more of a real adventure, that's for sure. I like to approach other cultures for what I can learn from them, and there certainly are, for the most part, very enjoyable differences to be experienced as well.

this is very true and the trend only got worse as each series went on. In Enterprise, for example, we are given strong hints that Archer is almost single-handedly responsible for the formation of the federation.

Wow I wish people would read my initial post better, I am NOT complaining about political correctness, I think it's just realistic to have racial diversity but NOT when the civilisation isn't evolved enough to have the required technology.

A fanfiction isn't needed, all you need to do is to take all the villages a Trek ship encounters with technology resembling Earth about year 1300 (like the village with the two ferengis in Voyager) and make it all white, black or asian instead.

Would you like some cheese with your whine?

I read the post in exactly the way you intended, but I prefer fewer mewling rants & more pro-active approaches such as writing your own prose or script-based manuscript submissions with surgically precise casting (in the foreword or elsewhere,) notes which far more effectively resolves your problem with Trek's past errors in judgment pertaining to casting & villages with anomolous technological development, racial convergence or whatever else puts a bug up your butt. Don't complain about it, fix it! Send in 'improved' manuscripts for future animated and/or CGI internet podcasts, books/graphic novels/comics, movies & TV to both Paramount Viacom & Pocket Books.

In a phrase:

"I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
- Ralph Waldo Emmerson.

Uh yeah ok I'll do my best to fix a non existant show...

You obviously did not read my initial post through if you think I complain about political correctness.

You seem obsessed about fan fiction etc, do people even describe racial setup in your little stories that doesn't even matter?

Again I don't need some stupid fan fiction to 'fix' a problem, just make sure in the future when the trek people visits a planet to be sure to think.."how did earth look at this stage of technology?"

Dammit, man, if you're not a writer yourself, you have no right to criticize another writer's stupidity!

Unless you write fanboy fiction on teh internetz!

Well, in ENT the message was a little different: Even imperfect humans can do things better than anyone else!

At the point when Archer said: "Maybe you should try acting like humans for a change" in a conference of Tellerites and Andorians, I knew Trek had dipped into the bottom of the simplistic cheese barrel.

Yes people, Behold the key to universal peace!:

"Act like humans!"

:guffaw:

^^I liked when Archer said that. Having a spine is not a bad thing; unfortunately rare for the Captain in Quantum Trek.

As to misskim's point... hmm, I'm reminded of the dreadful submarine action-movie U-571, where not only did the Americans discover the Enigma decoder before the Brits, but the Americans were an integrated submarine crew, with a feisty black sailor eager to battle the Nazis...

In other words, applying politically correct standards to the past is largely self-aggrandizing for present cultures. It implies a continuity of tolerance where none likely existed. And on the other hand, this sort of PC filtering diminishes the great strides integrated societies of the present have made over their intolerant pasts.

Lastly, displaying 'medieval' alien cultures as ethnically heterogeneous strains the viewer's credibility. We see enough bullshit in Star Trek without dismissing the whole story out of hand. It would better in these instances to display some consistency.

Yeah i hate those movies too, they rewrite history too much, i'm embarassed watching a movie where a black guy acts like will smith in the 50s

Actually, the "PC mix culture" that really annoys me was the one on Stargate SG1. We are supposed to understand that the Gou'old transported people from various ancient societies and that created the new cultures on different planets. So why do we have medieval societies that look as diverse as NYC? Why does the obviously Japanese-inspired culture (right down to the architecture and swords) have so many black guys and not a single Japanese one?

That used to really drive me crazy.

Why? BTW, which movie are you refering to?

... this thread should be a chapter in social misconceptions of American history.

Because it feels so stupid that the producers feel forced to portray black people like it's 2007. It feels like they don't want to hurt the black poeple's feelings or something.

I'm korean american and if they portrayed koreans etc in a 1890s movie like we're all integrated like we are now in 2007 I'd feel like they insulted my intelligence.

Anyway a good example would be wild wild west of such a movie, I know I saw some ww2 movie too but can't remember it right now where the black guy was just totally accepted and everything was cool

I rhought that was a TOS thing. "I'm Captain James T Kirk from the United Federation of Planets. We're here to make you conform to our ideas and culture. (and sleep with your women)"

*gasp*

You mean there's a Trek show out there that is trying with all their might to be politically correct???? :scream:

I find that hard to believe.

No read my initial post and you'll find out my gripe has nothing to do with political correctness

Misskim86, et al.,

You know, for those of you bugged by the potential inaccuracy of portraying an alien medieval society as racially integrated, just try thinking of it as alternative casting.
