I guess being in the US has its advantages. I don't have to see him in his more cringe-worthy parts.

I share that privilege. Although when it comes to good TV, it's really annoying we can't get it even across the Channel.

One more thing: maybe JB's new show is terrible, I take everyone's word for it, but I don't think JB's only driven by profit like several people seem to suggest.
I am also familiar with his autobiography and one thing you can say about him (his appearances confirm it) is once he's reached success, he hasn't defended his turf against other performers like many others do. On the contrary, he's always supporting young talent. He organised performance arts workshops in his old high school. On TV the mentor role seems to suit him less. That's too bad.

I wouldn't suggest its profit as such, but for a lot of people the entertainment business is fickle so I can fully understand why when people get some fame they reach out and grab as much as they can of it. I suspect Barrowman's the kind of guy who loves working as well and probably can't say no to jobs He's only human as well, so it wouldn't surprise me if money is one of many motivations though (and I wouldn't blame him)

John Barrowman has fast become the cliche answer to the question "who would you go gay for?" I dont know who I would go gay for, but I like to hope it would be someone more orgininal than Barrowman.

Just suggesting that it's a wee bit curmudgeonly to moan about a particular stock answer to the question "as a straight man, whose cock would you accept up your arse?" when it's only ever asked or answered in jest and Barrowman is as good (and honest) answer as anyone else.

Probably because most straight guys aren't going to invest too much time and effort into analyzing who, exactly, they would change their sexual orientation for, thus they'll pick an easy one. Also, if one straight guy says he would go gay for Barrowman, then more than likely Barrowman has something of a universal appeal that would attract more straight men, thus making it seem like everyone is just picking him....when, in fact, it's just what is.

2) I wonder what it is that gives Barrowman such universal appeal, I get it hes an attractive man, but so are lots of guys, you dont see straight guys falling at there knees for Tennant.

One thing I would say is, that at least they are picking a guy who they stand a chance with (other than the fact he is married) no point picking a straight guy.

Perhaps it's not a 'stock' answer. Perhaps the reason so many straight men consider JB to be the one they'd go gay for is because he actually has some quality that appeals to straight men.

Maybe I'm not following your argument wamdue. If the question being put forward was something like 'what is six times ten?', would you object to people giving the answer 'sixty'? Would you dismiss that as a stock answer, a safe answer?
OK, that is an unrealistic example. But supposing we asked 'who was the best Doctor Who?'. I should imagine most people would go for Tom or David. Now does that mean the people answering are being unimaginative and timid and hidebound, or is it an honest answer?

im just one of those people who doesnt like doing what everyone else is doing, for example I was on a youth training scheme at one time, and a couple of times we got taken to the cinema, everyone in our group buggered off to see Lord of the Rings, whilst I went & saw a movie I actually wanted to see (SWAT) rather than just do what everyone else did, for no other reason than because everyone else was doing it.l

as for best Doctor Who, it is subjective, but im sure if you asked a group of real fans, you would get a better spread than if you were just asking normal people.

that said im a total new series fan cliche, so I guess I shouldnt really comment.

That's fair enough, I can see your point there.
It's just that your earlier post (and perhaps I'm reading more into it than you intended) seemed to suggest that the only reason you could see for group behaviour was some mindless follow the herd mentality. I was just suggesting that sometimes people can independently come to the same conclusion. It is possible, after all, that some people in your youth training group actually wanted to see LOTR, and would have gone to see it even without the rest of the group.
And some would have just gone along with everyone else. That's group dynamics for you.

For what it's worth, I am - or was - the kind of person who preferred not to share my preferences with everybody else. Like when I was a Brad Pitt fan in his earliest career but lost interest for the mere reason that everybody else was starting to rave and swoon over him.

There is such a thing as the need to feel a certain exclusivity. Some people can't abide competition and give up, it's a matter of pride.

You can also hate to howl with the wolves for having once or twice, in youth, been afraid to show your real opinion and caused someone who might have been your friend to have a lower opinion of you.

On the other hand there is such a thing as intrinsic quality that no one can deny. Or an easiness to like. It's like compating Mozart or Bach with Ravel or Schubert. You can safely admit you prefer the formers or find them better, and choose to listen to something more rare 9 times out of 10.

So Wamdue and The Badger, I agree with you both. I am of the exclusive kind but look, I'm a Barrowman fan. (Maybe because there are very few of us in France.) Also, I've mellowed my elitism a little, with music genres for instance. Not following the crowd should not be a cause of depriving oneself of a pleasure either.
Now if all things are equal intrinsically, go for the less popular choice any time. Unless you want company, or want to know what everybody's talking about.
