I Happen To Like John Barrowman

Cheesy sometimes on TV? Sure.
Funny? Often.
Lacking in good taste? Alas. Although he has very god taste in men, I almost forgot. (Trying to keep the irrelevant bits out.)

Competing for the campest TV host and guest on British TV? Absolutely.
A victim of his own success? I won't shed a tear.

Not the greatest champion of gay rights? Celebrities may have a responsibility, but hey, he's getting a lot of exposure on mainstream, public TV. And he's an entertainer, not a politician. Not to mention he has done his bit (poster campaign, openly gay celebrity...)

Good-natured? You gotta grant him that.
Chummy with David Tennant in particular? I'm sure you guys don't disapprove.
Giving, and generous with his fans? You bet.

Completely narcissistic? Look who's talking.
Self-imbued? Lifelong habits are hard to shake.

Anyway, pride and even arrogance are almost necessary qualities in a SINGER, which is what he's always been. :)

There's a thread about John Barrowman's worst, I thought it would only be fair to start one about his best - besides Captain Jack. I know, I said this sort of thing belonged in TV & Media. Just trying to balance things out a little. I disagree with no one in that "cheese" thread, but I'm sad about it.

In spite of quite a few unhappy choices of songs, JB happens to be a really good singer and although not everything is available online, here's a glimpse of my favourite.

The only complete album I found online so far (on deezer.com - no download, free and legal): John_Barrowman_Swings_Cole_Porter
It's the musical Anything Goes, in which JB starred on stage 4 times.
Special mention to "I Happen To Like New York", it's the one he sings best.

The video of the pop single (written for JB) from Music, Music, Music: What_About_Us
This latest album Music, Music, Music (titled after the 3 genres featured: "straight pop", as he puts it, music theatre/easy listening, and country/pop) is not bad. Decent covers of many pop hits.
Special mention to the City of Angels soundtrack cover "Angel".
Short excerpts on amazon.co.uk: Music,_Music,_Music
(Not trying to peddle, here. I hope this is okay. Anybody got a link to a non commercial site with that stuff, be my guest.) It also features, in tiny size, the making of the What About Us music video ("making of" vid available on YouTube).

Six_songs_from_the_album_Another_Side
I recommend to skip the first song "All Out Of Love" or at least its beginning (I don't care if it was a hit) and favour "Feeling Good" (Nina Simone cover) above all.
Then "Your Song", and "Heaven" (I used to listen to Bryan Adams, so I like that one). Others might prefer "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic". For the teenage parties nostalgics (or Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom, for instance), there's "Time After Time".

Warning: all that sweetness (most songs in this album) can be a little sickening to a rock'n'roll-oriented heart. You must be not allergic to 'easy listening', or favourably prejudiced.

Please post links to his other work as a singer if you know where to find it. (If it's any good. :D)

Out of the lyrics of Cole Porter's "I Happen To Like New York", here's an excerpt about unconditional love:
I happen to like New York, I happen to like this town.
I like the city air, I like to drink of it,
The more I know New York the more I think of it.
I like the sight and the sound and even the stink of it.
I happen to like New York.
PS: I'll get annoyed if anybody else says he looks like Tom Cruise. Even Tom Cruise doesn't look like Tom Cruise any more!

And no one will let that go. Is that going to be the only thing you remember? That's a bit short.

Edit:
Noticing how quickly you replied, I doubt you read a word of my OP.
But everybody's entitled to their preconceptions. :p

To be honest it did dent my feelings towards him, I am dissapointed in him if he does things like that, but it hasn't significantly affected how I think about him.

Not the greatest actor in the world, but he is more comfortable in a theatrical setting which goes some way to explaining that, he does at least have screen presence. He's likeable and disturbingly handome, and if he is appearing way to much on cheesier and cheesier shows these days, well I guess we can't fault him for wanting to rake the cash in whilst he's popular.

Can I have a thread about Tegan or Leela now :D

Agreed. I mean, so he likes dick & fart jokes. Get the fuck over it!

Barrowman is a funny, class-act. He's a fun actor, a fun celeb, and a fun entertainer. He likes to be wild on the camera? Big deal. That's one-in-a-million celebrities out there. Ever watched the Tennant Diaries on the WHO Season Three discs? He's very calm, and composed. He laughs with genuine glee and seems somewhat humble in those quiet times on set with Tennant and Freema. He's generous and humorously vain (I love the look on his face when David mentions on camera that John is turning 40).

All in all, Captain Jack Harkness played by John Barrowman is an extra treat of the new-age of Who that I never expected to be given. He's the modern equivalent of the Brigadier, and I love seeing him everytime he appears.

"Oh noes he pulled his weiner out on radio and makes campy gay jokes! Oh noes! Wat bout tha children?!!!!!!"

Get the fuck over it. :guffaw:

There are people who don't care for John Barrowman? Well, fuck them.

John's made of 100% pure awesome, and I always enjoy the heck out of him.

OK, he's not the worlds greatest actor (although I defy anyone to deliver a line like "Oh, my dear, what have they done to you?" (Torchwood, 'Meat') without making the audience cringe), but he's always struck me as likeable, charismatic, and enthusiastic.

I think that his strength as an actor, apart from his presence of course, and his voice, is his ability to deliver emotion in vulnerable moments.

In 'Something Borrowed' (Torchwood 2x09) I like his expression when he puts his hand in front of his mouth after Gwen says, "Did you retcon the whole wedding" ? like "Oops! I did it again". He looks mischievous and his eyes shine but his hand shakes and his cheeks are pink because he's emotional about the whole wedding.
That was well delivered. Just an example.

I like Barrowman, too. Sometimes I feel that I like him despite myself. I find him handsome, engaging, ethusiastic and self-deprecating at times. He's also very different to other entertainers out there at the moment, and I like that about him. Also, he's Captain Jack. And I love Captain Jack. A lot.

I guess being in the US has its advantages. I don't have to see him in his more cringe-worthy parts. :)

I like him a lot too. Dissapointed that he doesn't take his work more seriously. I guess for now he's just in showbusiness for laughs.

He's one of the few guys I'd consider going gay for. The dick and fart jokes just add to it.

He's a decent bloke, I enjoy his Who performance immensely. Don't pay much attention to his other work (not big on reality TV, not a fan of his "music") but more power to him.

Don't understand the "hate", but then there are people out there who already "hate" Doctor 11. E-hate is tame and inconsequential.

I haven't seen much hate for him on the forum to be honest, just some tongue in cheek 'God if he gets cheesier he'll end up changing his name to Edam.' style comments. At the end of the day having listened to a CD of his autobiography it's clear the guy is first and formost an entertainer, it's what he loves, what he does best. If anything the "serious" acting he's done on Who and TW aren't what he'd normally do, and he does (for me) fit better into Dr Who than Torchwood where he really would work better as second in command rather than in the leader role.

Apologies to The whose opinions I value and usually agree with, but I do have a bit of an issue with his need to get his cock out on command, especially given he has a fanbase that includes a lot of children, but it isn't a major issue and personally I still have the upmost respect and admiration for the guy...he will do anything on telly for money though

JB is my man-crush. if i go gay, he's the one for me.

John Barrowman has fast become the cliche answer to the question "who would you go gay for?" I dont know who I would go gay for, but I like to hope it would be someone more orgininal than Barrowman.
