I guess they'll need a new Master as well.

Hmm. "A woman of a certain age who's also this asskicking action figure" - apart from the odd "move very quick and kill the guards/disarm Clara" bit she hasn't actually done much action stuff, so is this a hint of stuff upcoming in S10?

Damn, that's disappointing. I was hoping she would continue to appear in the Chibnall era.

I'm torn. On the one hand I love Missy (whisper it but she might be my favourite Master) and I dislike the notion of each Doctor having to have his own Master, but the idea of the same actor playing the part constantly for four or five Doctors is equally irksome. I mean I liked Ainley a lot but he is a little too Delgado like and he's the Master for four different Doctors. I think ideally he should have regenerated at some point in Six's era.

I guess this feeds into Chibnall having a blank slate though. Although now we're established (or rather are about to establish) that we can have multi Master stories there's no reason Gomez can't come back...even if she regenerates before the end of Moffat's era.

Well, they shot themselves in the foot with the Classic Master by having him be out of regenerations after Delgado died. OK, I get the narrative of "The Deadly Assassin" in having a badly-injured, desperate Master seeking to claim a new source of life, and once he was Ainley he was trapped in a Trakenite body unable to regenerate (nixing Starkers' idea unless he got a new regen cycle from the Time Lords or otherwise hijacked a new body as per the Fox movie).

I think the writers of the new series got a little too taken with the idea that the Master should mirror the current Doctor - so I too am sad we won't see Missy versus Chibber's take on the Doctor. That said, assuming the series finale is a big showdown and Capaldi DOES regenerate as a consequence, it would feel too much like a "win" for Missy if she got away without also regenerating.

^Good point about the Master kinda being stuck as Ainley, but sure the writers could have found a solution if they'd wanted to. I think there was a contentment to just let Ainley remain the Master.

he was promised a new set of regeneratios in The Five Doctors though how sincere the High Council was with that offer we don't know but I'm sure the Master could have found a away to get what was offered.

Given the life he lead, I could see the Master go through regeneration's at a fast rate even than the Doctor.

It was poor CGI, but the Master we saw in the 1996 movie certainly still looked like Ainley.
Bah? The Master in the 96 movie's opening scene was Canadian actor Gordon Tipple, who was actually done up with physical make-up to look like Ainley, though, IMO, he looked more like Delgado.

Here's an interview he did with DWM last year explaining the process.

Going from memory, it really didn't look like an actual person, but now that you mention Tipple, I recall the name.

It always just looked like a vague outline to me, that might have been down to the crappy VHS quality!

Of course the perfect way to have the regeneration in this season but Capaldi at Xmas would be if Missy regenerates into Capaldi when Twelve regenerates into a new face...

Total speculation, but I would not be surprised if Missy kills the Simm Master and we see the regeneration in to her. Sounds like a Moffat thing to do.
