I Gotta Get This Off My Chest

About 3 or 4 years ago, I said that one day there would be a new Star Trek with someone else, other than the Shat, playing James T. Kirk. You should have seen the replies I recieved. However now, as the Simpson's Nelson would have said, "Ha-ha."

I loved Star Trek. No doubt I will see it again with other friends who didn't get to go this past weekend. I am by means some anal canonist, but there were a few things that got to me that just didn't make sense, so...

1. Did Kirk apply to the Academy or did he just "enlist." If he went to the academy, I presume this is where he met Gary Mitchell. If not, and he and McCoy enlisted together, it would make sense that McCoy would go straight into OCS, but what about Kirk? BTW, is OCS training co-located with the Academy? And where was Gary Mitchell?

2. JJ turns the timeline upside down. Hey, that's what he got paid to do, but what happened to Kirk's older brother? George, Jr. would have been born b4 Nero came on the scene. If both of George, Jr.'s parents were on the ship, his mother being prenant, where was George? BTW, why was Mrs. Kirk on board a ship and pregnant anyway?

3. How old was the Jim Kirk in the new movie? Nero must have really jacked things all up, becuase Spock had already been serving as a junior officer on the E b4 Kirk. BTW, what happened to "Number 1?"

4. How does a guy with no command experience, on academic probation mind you, go from cadet to Captain?

5. Old Spock tells young Kirk that Jim was close to his old man and that his Pa was at his graduation. That's weird since Kirk's parents were killed by Kodos the Executioner, a really cool name btw. I guess either events or old Spock's memory was altered becuase Nero attacked George Kirk senior's ship. But if that was true then how did Spock know that Kirk and his old man was close?

Maybe this is why I like the new Star Trek so much. It has as many time twists as LOST.

Kirk's parents weren't killed by Kodos.

It was later said (at least in books) that the Kirks were away and had left Jim with friends.

By the way, we never saw amything in the new movie that said Kirk was firstborn, or that George Jr. ("Sam") wasn't rolling his eyes over Jimmie stealing the car.

The ages, by the way, have been worked out and that's one thing it seems has been left UNchanged. Everyone, even Chekov, is just how old they should be, both in age and in relation to one another.

Spock was third in command of the Enterprise 13 years before year one of the TOS TV series.

Think about it.

Good for you.

He went to the academy a few years later in this timeline, so Mitchell was probably through.

As for OCS, one would assume that Starfleet Academy is an officer candidate school and a seperate institution exists for purely "enlisted" men.

what happened to Kirk's older brother?

Who knows...?

BTW, why was Mrs. Kirk on board a ship and pregnant anyway?

Hundreds of possible reasons.

3. How old was the Jim Kirk in the new movie?

He's 25.

BTW, what happened to "Number 1?"

Killed on the Kelvin? Who knows!

4. How does a guy with no command experience, on academic probation mind you, go from cadet to Captain?

He saves the Earth, defeats a massively superior ship, and no-one else was in line for the job, good for him.

That and maybe it is a genuinely excellent film.
