It would be, I reckon. In TNG Shelby could have replaced Riker post "Best of Both Worlds". Of course, stuff like that would be difficult to negotiate with the actors.
But it would keep the sow fresher and more realistic.
Are you thinking this just for the recurring//seldom seen characters or also for the leads?
