I got an New idea for a Trek show

I would dig a show/movie that has no humans in it. I don't need to see someone that looks like me to relate to the narrative. I also think creative freedom would be boundless if it were the case.

It doesn't have to be Trek though. Any sci-fi would do.

How about a series with a (largely) unseen Captain?

It revolves around the ship's permanent away team, composed of investigators, explorers, researchers, a medic, and occasional other ship specialists. It's lead by a senior lieutenant.

Get's the producers out of having to build an expensive bridge set, because we'll never see the bridge.

:)

That's a really neat idea and I'd like to see that! I'd also like to see the private lives, families and living quarters of those characters. Sort of like "Lower Decks" spread over a whole series. I'm sick of every character on Star Trek being single or with a largely off-screen family.

Though I have the feeling it would only work as a parallel spin-off to a regular ST show taking place on that ship. I'm afraid too many people would complain that there aren't enough battles and space anomalies and stuff.

But I like the bridge. It wouldn't be Star Trek to me without one.

Sounds like any number of 1960s WWII shows, where it was always about guys in the field and we never saw Allied Headquarters. Like 12 O'Clock High, Combat!, The Rat Patrol, Garrison's Gorillas, etc.

Or something like NCIS, for the first season we almost never saw the original director, later with Jenny and Leon they were there little bit more. The show's about the "away team," and a few more people "back on the ship."

With TNG I personally really liked the episodes that had the crew delving into a problem or a mystery that required a solution. As opposed to the more political episodes. The show could have "battles, " but they would be more like gun fights on the surface, or Jadzia in a runabout shoot at the Cardassians kind of thing.

I would very much like to see a show like that if it really managed to get out of that secluded, high command star ship bubble. We do not often get to see how the world of Star Trek is for the Average Joe. How do people outside the Enterprise live in the 24th century? What do they do? I feel among all the fandoms I am interested in Star Trek is one of those were we see and know the least about civilian life. Andromeda is similar, but it helps that most of the crew are more or less Average Joes (or pretend to be) and in the LOTR we at least learn a lot about how people in the Shire and Gondor live, even though daily life in Elven and Dwarven Settlements remains a bit of a mystery.

Yes Star Trek could very much use a more grounded installment like that.

Make the captain an alien in that case.

^ No, a Medusan! O-O That's why they can never go to the bridge (and thus the bridge set doesn't have to be built) All the bridge officers are Medusans!
The only link between our main characters and the ship's Captain would be a Vulcan officer (they can look at them without going bonkers, right?)

^ I understand where people are coming from when they said the captain should be Human, in terms of being someone the audience can identify with and project themselves into. But as long as the alien captain isn't too alien in appearance (like with Cardassian level make-up) and doesn't have a truly strange mind set, then a alien captain would work.

Usual stipulation about being well written of course.

... I think he/she should ...
Good idea, the alien captain should definitely be a he/she.

:)

I know the conundrum of which you speak. But some of the truly alien-looking characters are often the best/richest/most interesting (just look at Worf, Odo, Quark, Garak) and more relatable than tiresome and tedious humans (Chakotay, Kim, Archer, NuUhura).

Usual stipulation about being well written of course.
When we get a new Trek series, if the PTB don’t focus on the writing and character development, I think it’d be reason enough to hunt them down

That would be interesting to watch, it would definitely demand interesting and insightful writers on staff.

I know this idea of "lead character must be identifiable, therefore human" is quite orevalent, but I never understood it. Aliens rock!

Is Galadriel (an elf) not identifiable with her melancholy and regrets? Simba from Lion King (a talking, non-antropmorphic lion)with his fear of persecution, flight from responsibility and eventual redemption? Couldn't the Case be made for Worf being more identifiable than Picard or Riker?

To me the Captain is often the character I can least identify with and have the least interest in. Making them a he/she might actually help.

And I was sincere about the Medusan, Maybe not quite Medusan, but something that would be elaborate and expensive to put on the screen, since we would not see the Captain often.

But what if the captain is doing some shady stuff? iN THAT CASE THE MORE ALIEN THE BETTER. Heck, it would be great if the captain would change B5 style.

Periodically rotating the characters would be great, but not all at once.

Transisioning from Beverly to Kate went pretty smoothly. Tasha dies, Ro makes a occasional appearence, move Geordi, give more time to Miles, suddenly there's a part for Whoopie, Wesley is off to the academy.

Will should have left for his own command about half way through the TNG series, in with a new first officer.

It can be done.

:)
