I got a new kitten

My neighbor doesn't like cats, so she was in for a surprise when she found kittens living in her garage. Long story short, we managed to catch one and it's now living with us. Don't have a name yet, since we don't know if it's a male or a female. But it's pretty cute either way. We're keeping it in a cage for now, since it doesn't have it's shots and we're not sure if it'll get along with our current cat.

Pretty. Nice colour of eyes. But (s)he doesn't look friendly. I understand you didn't venture to ascertain the gender!
Everybody seems to be getting new cats around here. *sigh* I'm a bit envious.

We'll ask the vet when it gets its shots what the gender is. It seems friendly enough, just scared.

That's very nice of you actually; taking in a homeles cat!

Irresistible though they are…

But oh, if eyes could kill :rommie:

Too bad you didn't catch one more -I'd love to have a cat around here.

Well, the rest are under her deck, so, since they're not bothering anyone, we decided to let them be for now.

I wouldn't look friendly if I were in a cage either.

Just let that commercial ad on TV guide you. The one where The person comes home with a new adopted animal and they try to make they animal feel at home but the animal balks until finally the human quits. The animal then initiates contact or play.

quick notes:

Fleas. Hard to get rid of. Frontline and Advantage are the bast out there. Don't use anything else. If your cat has fleas there's a excellent chance your cat also has worms. Fleas carry worm eggs in them - cats eat the fleas and the flea eggs. Ask your vet for a dewormer. It's applied just like the anti-flea stuff (the new stuff anyway)

Get your cat used to his or her paws being handled. This'll make it easier to trim the cat's nails in the future. IMO, declawing a cat is barbaric and cruel. You don't want a fight when trying to trim the cat's nails. You've had a paper-cut before? Try a deep cat scratch.

If your cat is just sitting there and it blinks at you, blink back. It's saying hi.

If your cat likes to suck on parts of your body like your earlobe and it's uncomfortable for you, apply some lemon juice concentrate to your earlobe for a few days. The cat will sick, get a surprise and quickly get the message.

Don't give your cat the tuna fish water from the can. Far too much sodium for the cat's kidneys to handle.

No chocolate. Theobromine (scientific name for chocolate is theobromine cacao) is toxic to both cats and dogs.

If ever a cat delivers you a mouse or a bird, its the biggest compliment a cat can do you. It's showing you appreciation for being its friend by giving you something your cat could've used as food.

Another biggie is when a cat rolls over whenever you approach. If you notice you cat collapses wherever it happens to be and rolls over on its back - that's like you're Steven Tyler and he's Wayne Campbell.

One more thing; If you can help it, don't let your cat outside. Your cat will be just as comfortable and a thousand times as safe inside. Oh, and get it fixed before its first birthday (around 8 months).

I've had a cat for 12 years or so, so most of that advice isn't really needed (although I wish you were there 12 years ago about the sucking the earlobe thing. She doesn't do it anymore, but it took awhile for my cat to break that habit).

Thanks for the advice about fleas and worms. When the kitten gets taken to the vet, we'll make sure all that's taken care of. Everyone else in my family has started calling it a she, but I'm trying not to get into that habit until I find out for sure. If you guys want to drive to Delaware and trap a cat, you're welcome to one of its siblings ;)

Oh, what a beautiful pussycat. I love grey cats. She is so pretty. I'm feeling a little sad at the moment because my friend's cat had to be put to sleep today. :(

Nice kitty!

You just have to admire the composure of cats.
Even at such a young age they have such poise and elegance. I don't see the look (s)he has as nasty or evil or whatnot, it's just there to show that even if you do put them in a cage, they are just -so- above it.

Or at least that's how I see it. :D

Yeah, it's confused. Possibly a bit scared, but it's playing it cool like it doesn't bother it.

That's a great looking cat, but he (or she) looks like she (or he) might already be a little bit feral. You should keep her out of the cage as much as possible and interact with him (or her) a lot until she (or he) gets a clean bill of health; lots of talking and patting. My sister brought home a kitten she found in the woods one time, and even though it was probably less than six weeks old, it was always standoffish its whole life.
