I finished B5: Crusade

And so Sheridan to avoid favouritism appoints a man who worships him as his idol.

In Sheridan's defence I don't think he actually knew (or cared very much) what Gideon thought of him. I do wonder how Sheridan knew about the guy though. It's never been addressed if he was involved in either side during the civil war or if he was out serving on an explorer ship at the time.

Actually, maybe Jack Maynard recommended him? Gideon was still an Ensign in early 2259 so it's highly unlikely he'd be commanding a ship of his own just two years later.

I

The plague story was interesting, but I felt the FX took a step backward from the later seasons of B5.

IIRC, TNT ordered that the "black uniform episodes" (the ones they wanted to air first) have their effects completed first. So the "gray uniform episodes" have effects that were done kind of quick-and-dirty.

I'm usually pretty lenient on the Babylon 5 cgi, but man, Galen's homunculus was terrible!

Crusade wasn't a bad show, but it hardly held a candle to Babylon 5, first ten episodes or otherwise.

I disagree. Let's look at the first ten produced B5 episodes:
101 - Infection
102 - Soul Hunter
103 - Midnight on the Firing Line
104 - Born to the Purple
105 - Believers
106 - And the Sky, Full of Stars
107 - The War Prayer
108 - The Parliament of Dreams
109 - Grail
110 - Mind War

Can you tell me that, given these episodes, you could get any accurate idea of what Babylon 5 was really going to be about?

Personally, based on those 10 episodes of B5, I had a greater appreciation for the characters and early plot developments than anything from Crusade. It doesn't matter that these episodes didn't have much of a connection to the greater series arc, they were still better than Crusade.

I think the homunculus was just a case of the technology simply not being ready. Now of course, video games can render far better human figures in real time. How quickly the technology has moved on.

Something about that scene always reminds me of Peter Cook's appearance on Blackadder in an unintentionally comical way.

As for Crusades episodes; believe it or not it actually makes a surprisingly difference to one's impression of the show if you try watching though in JMS's preferred order. I didn't believe it until I tried it for myself and it was made all the better I think by totally leaving out 'War Zone'....and maybe 'Visitors from Down the Street.'
