^Even when I find the AVP films far more watchable than the last couple regular Alien films?
I didn't even find the second AVP watchable in any sense, most of the time it was so dark you couldn't see anything.

Are you seriously saying that AvP:R was better than Alien 3 and RES? Even RES is enjoyable as a prototype for Firefly. And A3 is basically the prototype for Fincher's later movies while reminding us of what a dark place the Alienverse is and that good things are only fleeting. Nice to see that not everyone buys into that "kids must always survive" nonsense.

"Better"? Well, I'd say it's close to a draw between AVPR & Alien Resurrection. AVPR is just my personal preference.
I'll concede that Alien 3 is indeed "better" than either of the AVP films. However, despite its interesting themes and a nihilism that I'm happy to appreciate, the action scenes of Alien 3 are totally incomprehensible & unwatchable. A mortal sin for an action movie. Now, I might be willing to up Alien 3's ranking if 20th Century Fox had done a more thorough job restoring the audio on the Workprint Cut of the movie.
