I finally got a condo!

I'd been looking around for a year-and-a-half and there was finally one that I could afford. My father took care of the down payment for me, we finalized the paperwork, had lawyers look at the place, and I'm all set.

The inside looks like shit but we'll be working on it every weekend this month, as soon as I get the keys on Friday.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to is how tight my money is going to be for the forseeable future. It's going to be hard. And I don't think I'm going to have cable or Internet. In fact, I'm almost positive I won't.

Maybe this is good excuse to replace my cellphone with a BlackBerry.

I traded up from my old three bedroom family home to a two bedroom condo last year, 2007.

It's an older Hotel, refurbished into Condos and for people 55 or older without children. I added my internet costs in when I was shopping and considered it part of the mortgage. Internet is a utility these days.

What's nice about Condos is NO yard work or outside maintenance.

Congrats. I purchased my first home - a condo - in summer '07. Prices had already come down, but I kick myself that I didn't hold out a bit longer because there are even nicer places on the market now that I couldn't afford back then, but could buy now. My place was a bit of a fixer-upper. Needed a lot of cosmetic work, and a whole new kitchen. I've really cleaned the place up and it looks nice. But I've had quite a few water-related problems that make me question whether or not I've been cursed.

If at all possible, do not have anyone live above you! I wanted top floor but gave in when I couldn't find anything in my price range that I liked. I'm kicking myself for agreeing to buy a ground floor unit.

I wouldn't want a first floor either but not because of water-related issues, more because it's the easiest floor to break into.

Ack. I got mixed up and said the wrong thing. The laywer reviewed the paperwork after we looked at it. I thought he did more. The lawyer was hired by my father and I just asked him. He told me before and I forgot the details.

Nice, i had a feeling thats what you were saying. i.e. the lawyer looked at the paper work.. Doesn't buying a home take a shit-ton of time to sign all that paper work? I think we were there for like 3+ hours.. Looking over all the paper and signing each one. But nothing like owning your own home. For all you renter, it's the single best thing you could ever buy..

It gets quicker I think. I was amazed how much faster and more seamless the process was on my second purchase. The first time I was scrutinising everything! The second time I knew roughly what each document was, so it was all much slicker.

I'm thinking in the middle of the month. We'll be working on it during the weekends. After the second weekend enough should be done so that I can move in even if things still look like a work in progress.

Good luck with that. Whenever I did what you're talking about doing every day when I came home from work I couldn't keep myself from doing something. There's nothing wrong with that, things actually get done sooner, but you have to make sure you don't wear yourself out at the same time.
