I felt a little discomfortable when Kirk ordered fire all weapons on Nero

It was a waste of ammunition. Their torpedoes weren't accomplishing anything the singularity wasn't already.

And we know it was all for the final spectacle of The Enterprise unleashing her arsenal. I've never thought about it, but it does seem a tad un-Starfleet.

Narada survived passage through a singularity before. It wasn't unwarranted to be concerned that it might do so again.

The first time, it flew into the singularity.
The second time, the Jellyfish crashed into it and the singularity opened within the Narada.

I'm not saying it was a sure thing, but the two circumstances were very different.

Indeed. And Kirk could not afford to assume it would just be destroyed by the black hole.

Again, Nero represented a threat that destroyed an entire planet. Characters in Star Trek have killed for less with no dispute.

Billions died but spare Nero?

Given the damage Narada caused after their first incursion, I can hardly blame Kirk for wanting to reduce the odds of it happening again as much as possible. It's not as though he beamed aboard (or had someone else do so) to sacrifice themselves to ensure its destruction; he just unloaded Enterprise's weaponry, so he wasn't even reckless about it.

It's not even just Nero. For all we know even the remains of Narada surviving passage could alter the timeline. Unfortunately, Our Heroes didn't really have an option for 100% destroying the ship.

ETA: Somewhat ninja'ed by fireproof.

Maybe Kirk wanted to make sure no one could salvage the wreck of the Narada and try to reverse engineer the technology, wherever it ended up.

Though no longer in common use in English, it does appear to be current for Brazilian Portuguese and means the same as what we would call "uncomfortable".

Fascinating. I thought about it; then that we have ‘discomfort’ and wondered but could find nothing. English teacher here, so genuinely interested and thanks!

Yeah I originally felt it wasn't a good move after seeing the film but then one of the writers said the same thing about him possibly going back further in time and I changed my mind. Screw Nero.

Maybe they could have Nero preparing to fire on the Enterprise and that is the reason Kirk fired on Nero

Pretty sure Nero is the only successful genocide by a mortal being in the Trekverse? Except maybe Georgiou but that's all spoken of in past tense and all we actually see her her bombing one settlement from orbit.

He was very, very dangerous and I don't blame them for making 110% sure he couldn't hurt anyone else.

Nero destroyed Vulcan and six billion of its inhabitants because his wife was killed in a natural disaster, I don't really understand why people expected Kirk to treat him with kid gloves.
