I did something bad with a 16 yr old and dope

Wht disturbs me the most is that a number of people are shocked that your son kept a diary/journal. While women do it more often than men, many men do it as well. I've never had the discipline to do it but doing it is very healthy.

Honestly- what's the problem with him keeping a journal? I'd like to hear a legitimate answer to this.
I've more often heard it referred to as a journal instead of a diary - but I agree - what's the problem with it?

Well he wouldn't be the first teenager who enjoys writing who keeps a journal male or female. I've never kept a diary because I don't want any evidence of my exploits written in my own hand but I have notebooks full of short stories, poetry, song lyrics, and drawings.

I'm the same way. I'm incredibly paranoid.

I always think of Anne Frank you know. Everybody knows her embarrassing teenager thoughts, she'd be horrified. Though her diary is a great window on the times, imagine if someone published your teenage diaries and 8th graders had to read it for the rest of eternity. HORROR!!!

K'ehleyr, I smoked plenty of grass when I was (much) younger and was around plenty of other, much stronger drugs back then. I can't say that it ever gave me an appetite for stronger drugs. My personal opinion is that smoking dope was no more harmful to me than alcohol which was also in plentiful supply and it never was any kind of 'gateway' to the really strong stuff.

As for 'brain damage', the brain is a marvelous organ with multiple redundancies that can cope with losing many many cells. I do recall a certain dullness the next day after being high, though. I equated it to a hangover, just less painful.

All that said, there are two things I'd mention by way of cautioning your son. First, like any drug, weed affects your judgement. Did his journal say anything about how he was affected? Could be he just gets sleepy and the munchies but something might seem like a good idea while he's stoned that he'd never do when straight. You may well have experience with that of your own. He's sixteen, right? Is he smoking in mixed company? With heightened senses, he could be experimenting with other things while he's high so you need to ensure that he's got protection and safe practices drilled into him.

Secondly, from everything I've read, pot is much stronger these days than it was in mine. Maybe that means that people need less and don't smoke as much as we did back in the day but it could well mean that they're getting that much more wasted. That goes back to what I said about his being able to call you if he doesn't feel safe.

Kids have a feeling of indestructibility that no amount of cautioning on your part can counter. All you can do is provide the means for him to do his experimenting as safely as possible. You know your son best, could you let him know that you know what he's up to and set some ground rules?

Sounds like you're a very cool mom.

Bah it's not the weed it's the fear of the information superhighway. I also avoid posting about illegal behavior on Facebook. I care about my future employment you know.

i write a diary and have since i was about 13. what's weird about that? never heard of 'The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4'?

Cap, 31 2 months 2 days.

^Or Diary of a Wimpy Kid?

So only girls can write down their thoughts, feelings? Gee, tell that to every male writer/author out there! :p

DaVinci kept a journal too ;)

My old notebooks contain lots of quasi goth poetry. Stuff like "my soul bleeds and I am numb." I was a sad dark little thing.

Pot is a lot more natural than any cigarette you will ever buy in any store on this planet. Plus grow your own, know your grower.

Plus your brain doesn't finishing developing until 27-29, at which stages it starts to fall apart.

Yes, but nothing dangerous, just 'I have feelings for so-and-so' who I can definately not look in the eye over a game of scrabble again:lol:! I do vet his friends. But then the ones that a parent disapproves of are usually the most tempting!

Oh with the skunk and that! I'm such a cool mum I got wrecked on one toke of a neighbours spliff quite a few years ago. That stuff is bad!:shifty:

As for the journal... Son writes poetry, takes beautiful photos, has a page on deviantart.
Yep, if some of us didn't have BBS to talk to, who would you?

You mean you're not any more? -- RR

I'm still dark, but sad, no. I got over that teenage depression when I realized being funny, cynical, and dark is much more satisfying.

:techman: It's no wonder you're enamored of the movie The Professional! -- RR

I'd like to thank my father for exposing me to the violence in that movie at the tender age of 12. Is hitman apprentice to Jean Reno a legitimate professional aspiration?

Okay I knew I shouldn't have but I read my 16yr old son's diary. Strike me down but also show me a Mother who would not admit doing it! And I didn't go sneaking for it ~ I was mucking out his room before leave weekend this weekend and found a french exercise book, as he has french gcse oral exam today I thought he might need it! No ~ I was soon immersed into a 16 yr old's mind! And lots of smoking weed. My instinctive advice for him just don't bloody get caught smoking at school and hope it will blow over ~ pun intended. I know teenagers are teenagers so would appreciate advice on the best way to deal with it?
The rest wasn't that bad ~ well I got called a dragon, but in a wierd way I'm proud of that

Didn't you see "Reefer Madness"? If you don't get him off the weed he might go crazy and kill someone. :)

Jason

No he might laugh hysterically and jump out of a window in a high rise. It's true, I saw it in a government film. There might also be some nutty piano playing.
