I call it, "The Borg Trilogy"

This is a common criticism of FC, but I don't think it is necessarily all that unrealistic. It could be that Picard thought he was over it, but then had all his dark thoughts resurface once again when the Borg pushed him into a corner.

I think I would have been fine if they simply explained that the Queen's presence had triggered some old programming or memory in him that sent him over the edge. But instead all it seems to take is a random attack by the Borg to have him suddenly seething and raging like a madman, and throwing things across the room.

It just didn't feel like Picard to me.

But it wasn't a random attack. The Borg had taken over the earth and Picard had to go after them to stop them, which, once they began taking over the Enterprise, meant facing them up close and personal again. He was very brave, and obviously initially disturbed by this encounter.

Not only that its the first time the real collective made a real entrance into the Alpha Quadrant. Enough so that he could hear them.

With Hugh its a tiny craft of what less then ten Borg. With Descent its Borg not in a true Collective.

First COntact, is with Picard actually mentally feelings his connection to the Borg (that has got to get him rightly pissed off), and its the first time since BoBW where the Borg are making an out and out attack on Earth, and had succeeded. When he starts to really get all Moby Dick, is after Earth has fallen, the one last chance to save humanity his is ship. His Ship, and that's been invaded, getting transformed, with his crew being assimilated.

Yeah sorry I have no problem with Picard, having the reaction he did.

Yes, First Contact is the only time Picard came back into contact with the Collective since BOBW.

In "I, Borg" Hugh had been disconnected from the Collective mind so Picard couldn't "hear" anything from him and they were able to hide themselves from Hugh's rescue ship (which was also just a small scout ship, not a Cube) so Picard wasn't close enough to "hear" any of them either. Then in Descent they'd all been disconnected.

I can definitely understand Picard being upset with all the damage the Borg are doing, but the way he gets spitting mad at Worf, or throws an Ahab-like tantrum in the Conference Room-- demanding that the Borg "pay" for what they've done-- just felt way too childish and immature coming from him, even in that situation.

It frankly felt about as forced and contrived to me as the crying scene in Generations. Just a transparent attempt to amp up the emotions for the big screen, regardless of whether it was consistent with the character or not.

(I still love the movie, of course; it's just that one segment of it that always makes me cringe). :)

Open your eyes maybe just a bit further, and watch it again, and just maybe you will see the merits of the calibre of acting Stewart accomplishes. He should have been nominated for some kind of award for that film.

That's a great action series - if you want to add a dash of existentialism in there, put I, Borg on the list.
I'm glad you left Descent I and II out of it. It's a great TNG two parter but I find it lacks as a good "Borg story" since those Borg are not part of the collective and act like cybernetic idiots.

Picard: If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you?
Drone from Descent: If Lore asked me to, yes.

Picard: Cybernetic idiots, the lot of you.

Agreed. Additionally, it's not really a Borg story, but a Lore story with the Borg as mere henchmen. To me that began the descent (hah, get it?!) to the mostly awful Borg stories of the next few years, First Contact being an exception.

If Q Who, BOBW, and FC are the trilogy, I would think Family and I, Borg would be great as companion pieces, or spinoffs of the trilogy.

Family should have been on the Fan Collective-Borg release. I think it dealt nicely with the issues of its preceeding episodes and what came later in the film.

Trilogy watching doesn't necessarily mean in the same night though.

Sometimes, when I get a hankering for some TNG, I'll spend a week of evenings watching some, & when I do, the Duras family arc is one that is good to have a go at
