I Am The LAW! Judge Dredd returns

There are only two things I would want to hear in a new Dredd movie:-

"Gaze into the face of Fear."

That said there's a lot about the Stallone film to like (and a lot not too) I was actually more pissed off by the kiss at the end than Stallone taking his helmet off.

Another fan of the Stallone Dredd film here... (although it certainly is far from perfect)
I'm glad to see others with a more realistic view of the whole "Dredd always wears a helmet" issue.

For you others, I've got something to say: A live-action Dredd movie where Dredd never removes his helmet - Ain't. Gonna. Happen. :)

If that was truly the worst thing about the Stallone Dredd, then that movie must have been a masterpiece.

Well I remember at the time arguuing that him taking his helmet off wasn't a huge issue because at the end of the day its not like we don't know what Stallone looks like! Even Peter Weller didn't wear the helmet for all of Robocop.

Not saying Dredd should doff it in the first five minutes, and maybe he should always keep it on when 'on the streets' but in his quarters/ briefings etc. Always seemed a bit silly that in the comics he's the only judge who keeps his hemlet on even in the sleep machine. Aside from some early indications it's never really been said that he's horribly disfgured or anything.

I guess it's the image more than anything, he's more than a man. I still think it's viable to get this across in the film yet still allow him to be helmetless at times.

I don't see why. Not every film has to have a romance subplot, or a massive star who's face needs to be seen. Cast an unknown for his Dredd-playing skills, it'll leave you with more budget for the rest of the movie, and his agent won't demand that his face be shown.

Edited to point out that I've just remembered that "V for Vendetta" did it very successfully.

I don't remember much about the Stallone Judge Dredd except "I am the LAW!" so I don't really have anything to say about a remake.

I'm thinking they might go like the comic this time. From what I understand it's basically just British alternative writers beating people over the head with the not-so-subtle message that American Superhero's are a bunch of Nazi's in funny costumes.
That's Marshal Law, not Judge Dredd (although ML's writer, Pat Mills, was heavily involved with the creation of Dredd as well - not least by coming up with his name!)

Actually, now might be the perfect time for a Marshal Law movie; since the glut of superhero films (most of them proving Sturgeon's Law) has meant that the B, C and D-listers are being called to the screen in the studios' never-ending appetite for product, having someone cull the herd in as brutal and blackly comic a manner as possible could be just what the genre needs.

As for the new Dredd movie, while I'd love to see the Dark Judges on the big screen I kind of hope they adapt the Judge Cal storyline, since it showcases Mega-City 1 in all its madness and makes Dredd both hero and ruthless bastard, exactly as he should be. (They'd have to rename Fergee, though - unless they decide to cast Rob Schneider again!)

Yes!!!1!one :techman:

I would love to see a Marshal Law movie. ML was the last comic I bought, before I stopped buying comics altogether.

I loved the comic and hated the movie. They took 3 plots from the old comic and screwed them all up. Stallone was a horrible choice for the role imo.

I thought Sunshine was rather good. Considering it's relatively low budget (from what I gather) I say it performed admirably and avoided looking like a dumbed down blockbuster.
Granted it's no 2001 (but then what is?) but in terms of "near-future, non-alien related space dramas" go it beats out just about everything else, including the likes of Event Horizon, those tedious Mars related movies and that rubbish James Spader one.

Getting back to Dredd; I'm still waiting for them to make a half decent video game. Seams like a no-brainer to me; make it a cross between GTA & Deus Ex and cast the player as a Rookie Judge. The elements for a free roaming, sidequest filled action RPG are all there: a gun that can fire various types or ordanance, a bike that can drive itself and a city full of lawbreakers. They could even steal a trick from Fallout 3 by having the early life flash forwards as part of the tutorial/character creation phase. Or if they wanted to lift the title character from the comics, Judge America Beeny (weird name aside) would be an excellent choise.

For me Dredd taking off the helmet wasn't as bad as the tossing in nonsense about Dredd and Judge Hershey having some kind of romantic feelings and the complete lack of Psi Judge Anderson. It would have been good to have Dredd's robot Watler make an appearance as well.

They have to keep the Klegg fight song " slicey slicey, oncey twicey, claw and fang'll kill Dredd nicely! Meaty beaty, chop 'em neatly, death or glory no retreatee!".

If only he had booked her straight away

Taking off the helmet wasn't a mortal sin, he's done so in the comics, and not just those teaser panels where he takes it off but has his head in shadow.

Oh, I dunno. Dredd never reported DeMarco when she kissed him. Of course, Jura Edgar eventually used that incident against DeMarco to get at Dredd.
