I am building a dog house

Admiral
I don't own a dog, but I have been looking for a carpentry project, and my friend told me she needed a dog house for her two pugs.

I bought a bunch of lumber and a brand new circular saw earlier today, and I plan to start (and hopefully finish) construction tomorrow.

To those of you who have owned dog houses, are there certain things you look for?

Roger, that's really nice of you to do. Make sure you take a picture of the doghouse when you are done with it.

Remember to not confuse feet for metres when measuring out the wood. :p

(10 points to whoever tells me which tv programme/film that happened in.)

Decent sized staircase.

This is proving to be more of a challenge than I was anticipating. It doesn't help that the wood is extremely warped.

I'm trying to figure out how I want to finish the outside. I was thinking stucco...

"Yeah, blueprints, not a bad idea. That and getting straight, "measure twice, cut once." You know, for the longest time, I had it backwards. Messy."

10 more points if you get that one.

Update:

My neighbor came down and said, "I gotta know, man. What the hell are you building?"

Me: "It's a dog house."

Neighbor (skeptical): "Is it?"

Me: "Well, it will be when it's done."

Neighbor: "If you say so...."

<insert picture of snoopy sleeping on top of his doghouse here>

*takes thread in totally wrong direction by making sexually charged wood joke*

;)

But seriously though, i hope it turned out well. I am so totally not handy it's not even funny. The sad part is that before my dad retired, he was a carpenter. Never taught me any of those skills though, sadly. :(

First get a make-shirt piece of garbage, maybe just something made of cardboard, to see if the dog will even use one. You don't want to pour all that money and time into one and then he snubs it. Think of cats and toys -- never mind the pricy toy you shopped for, bring on the cheap box!

"This Is Spinal Tap" movie. They made a really small stonehenge for the stage.

Well, um, considering the dog is going to be living in it, I don't think he has much of a choice.

This project is taking way longer than expected. I had to take about a week off because of work, but today just pissed me off. My roof is not cooperating.

I did, however, go to the Habitat for Humanity store and got a lot of donated materials for super cheap! Roofing, vinyl siding, and peel & stick flooring...all for just $12. This might be my new favorite store.

^^ You should have picked up Jimmy Carter while you were there. He'd finish up that sucker for you pronto.

In the film/programme I'm thinking of, it was actually a dog house, but feet->metres meant it ended up the size of a garden shed.

Since that sounds like the Tim Taylor model, I'm going to take a wild stab at it and guess Home Improvement.

That was a great idea. They have tons of cheap stuff.

Do you already have it all built? Add a vent (or fancy-looking hole ;)) if you can, to keep the air flowing.

It'd be great if the floor wasn't directly on the ground for cold winter months, too.

But I'm sure whatever you've done is great. :)
