I am annoyed with a friend

Miss Chicken

Little three legged cat with attitude
Admiral
Last Friday was my birthday. Orginally myself and two friends were going to go out to lunch for my birthday. I choose a nearby bistro because I like the food they serve. I told my friends not to buy me a present (which they normally do) instead they could put their money towards their meal. My son gave me the money for my meal.

One of my friends had to work last Friday so we changed the lunch dte until today.

Anyway we sit down at our table and and the waitress hands us our menu. My friend Tania then says "I bet there will be nothing on the menu that I will like"

Here is a PDF of the menu concerned.

I made a few suggestions but Tania came up with a reason why she wouldn't like anything I suggested.

Such as

Beef and broccoli stir fry - Tania said she hates broccoli
Linguini pasta - No good - she hates spinach
Thai beeef salad - She hates Thai cooking
Chicken curry - she hates curries

I then suggested maybe she could have one of the entrees such as

Tempura chicken with honey ginger glaze - she hates ginger
Huon mushrooms cooked in garlic butter - she hates garlic

She turned down the Soup of the Day after we found out it was pumpkin soup.

I know that she often eats fish and chips (french fries) so I suggested those. She said she was not going to pay $23.50 for fish and chips. I told her that that $23.50 included all you can eat from the gourmet bar. She went up to look at what was on offer at the gourmet bar and came back and said there was nothing there she would eat (there was salad, potatoes, vegetables, pasta and cheese etc)

Any way in the end all she had the entire meal was iced water.

I had the Beef and broccoli stir fry and salad from the bar.

My other friend had pumpkin soup and salad from the bar.

When it came time for desert Tania said there was nothing that she liked

There was

Cherry ripe cheesecake
Raspberry and lenon sorbet
Hot french apple cake (which I had)
Sticky date pudding
Banana split with icecream
Chocolate mudcake

I am annoyed because I would have preferred to have gone out for the meal on my birthday. We changed it just so Tania could come along and then I felt guilty because I was eating in front of her.

BTW it wasn't because Tania doesn't have money. He income is about three times mine.

Would you guys have been annoyed at her? Would you have found something on the menu you like?

I do not believe violence solves anything. That said, I think you're a saint for not smacking her upside the head. I'd have been furious.

On the other hand, she probably annoyed herself even more than she annoyed you. I can't imagine it was genuinely a case of not liking a single thing on the menu - sounds to me like she came in bad humour and only made herself worse. And at the end of the night, she also must've left hungry.

(Sometimes when I'm irritated, I look for the Shadenfreude.)

That's really... weird. Even if she wasn't hungry she should have ordered something. Or at least feign illness!

She sounds almost like my mom. We can never go out to eat somewhere where she doesn't have a problem with some aspect of the food. She won't refuse to eat, usually, but I can't remember a single time I've ever gone out with her where she hasn't expressed displeasure or disappointment with some part of her meal or the restaurant we're eating it in.

Some people are just really hard to please.

^^^^^
I hear you JB: there are some restaurants I'm afraid to return to with my father. I've heard the words "I'd like to see the manager please" more times than I care to remember. He's very hard to please when it comes to restaurants.

As for Miss Chicken's friend, I can't believe anyone would be that picky. I'm not sure what her problem was. It almost sounds like she was just in a bad mood and wanted to spread it around (after all, misery loves company).

Whatever her problem is, I don't think I'd let it affect my dining experience -- at least, I'd try to make sure it didn't. Hey, if I go to a restaurant with the intention of having a meal, that's what I'm going to do. After encouraging another person to order (and maybe offering to let them have some of my food), I can't do anything more if they refuse. It's their problem then. If I'm hungry, I'm going to eat -- if you don't want to, that's your business, but I'm not going to feel guilty about it. Maybe that makes me insensitive, but if it does, so be it. That's how I roll.

Could Tania be having some sort of emotional hangup? Has she done this before? That is just plain rude.

I think I'd visit the restaurant several times; the whole menu sounds tasty!

Miss Chicken, since you like to eat there, that's a solid endorsement. Tasmania is a bit of a ways away, though.

I could eat there. From the "Mains" menu.

I would start at the top and eat my way down one day at a time though.

It wasn't polite to complain though.

I liked the idea of just about everything on that menu. Some of it I could have ordered and known I'd be comfortable with it. Other foods were things I'd never eaten before but looked like they'd be delicious. That menu has something to appeal to everyone. Your friend was being unreasonably difficult.

I'd consider traveling to Tasmania just to try that sticky date pudding. Mmm... date pudding.

Last year we went to Muirs Fish Restaurant. If I remember corectly I had a small basket of scallops and salad and I think Tania had fish and chips. The year before that we went on a picnic. I know we have gone both to Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut but that would have more likely have been on her birthday as I wouldn't have pick either palce myself.

I think Tania might only like fast foods.

This is why I don't have friends...they are an annoyance.

If I end up at a restaurant that someone else selected, especially for someone else's occasion, I will find something that I can stomach. And I'll keep my trap shut about not liking the place. The main idea should be the company.

Bingo.
That menu had PLENTY for one to choose from, no matter what the preference, and I think the rudeness bothers me more than anything.

Maybe she wasn't hungry? But that doesn't really make sense either. Because she'd only have to say that and I'm sure you wouldn't have taken any offense. After all, the real point of the meal was to spend time with her friend on her birthday.

I got nothin', Miss Chicken. Is this particular friend usually prone to flights of crazy?

Not craziness but I think she is slightly socially inept. From her early twenties to her early thirties she stayed home and looked after her Mum who had Parkinsons Disease. As a result Tania is old-maidish even though she is 7 years younger than me.

Maybe she was out of her comfort zone? However this wasn't an upmarket restaurant, it was a family bistro at a local hotel.

Well I dunno, people who don't get out a lot occasionally act a little odd in public. I have a couple friends like that. They don't even know they're doing it and don't intend any offence. Hell, I'm prone to it myself occasionally and I get out plenty.

I'm sure you could sit down with her and jokingly ask her what the deal was and she'd either have a good explanation or something like "Oh, I was just being nuts that day. I dunno."

If she's a good friend of yours I'm sure she didn't realize she was screwing with your day by not eating.

That looks like a great restaurant. I'd have a hard time deciding what to order. :D

Mm, now I'm hungry...

Fish and chips followed up by banana split would do me nicely :)

As for Tania...I can't believe there wasn't anything on that menu that she would eat :|
