I'm a GPU guy, and I'm impressed with my GPU in my Samsung Captivate phone.

It is a PowerVR SGX540

http://www.imgtec.com/powervr/sgx_series5XT.asp

It's a Shader Driven Tile Based Deferred Rendering Architecture !

Capable of 90 Million Triangles/sec

4 Texture Units, 2048 Max Texture Size, 8 Max Lights

Currently OGL ES-CM 1.1 (until I get Froyo update for this phone) GPU is capable of OGL 2.0, greater than Shader Model 3 level graphics!

Using An3DBench from Android Market Place, my fillrate performance is:

Single Texture Fillrate – 9.52 MP/sec
Multi Texture Fillrate – 9.47 MP/sec

Other scores are:

High Object Count – 31.44 FPS
Multiple Lights – 55.57 FPS
High Polygon Count – 46.77 FPS
Keyframe Animation – 55.72 FPS
Game Level – 55.64 FPS

Total Score: 6630

If you have an Android phone, program is called “An3DBench” it is free. Also another program that will tell you all about your GPU in the System Information is “Quadrant” that one will show you all the OGL extensions your phone supports. So run it, and post your results here too.

If Microsoft and Sony don't watch out they're going to find their copsoles eclipsed by iPhones.

Consoles have the benefit of not having to stuff their GPUs into a space half the size of a credit card. ;)

Impressive specs for such a tiny card, but no where near as powerful as a PS3 or 360.

And yes Rii, I know you were kidding. :)

Not so much really. Sony and Microsoft keep banging on about sticking with their geriatric hardware for another half-decade or so whilst the mobile platforms are moving in leaps and bounds. 10yr lifecycle? Phones ran on coal ten years ago, now they're running Rage.

Well, if you actually want to have a discussion about it, there is no way either of those consoles will be around in another five years, at least not without replacements. Most industry insiders believe MS will be releasing preliminary information on their next console at next year's E3.

When Sony says they want a ten year life-cycle for PS3, you'd have to be pretty clueless to believe they mean "without a replacement". The PS2 is still selling, there's your ten year life-cycle, and that's what Sony is referring to.

And if you really want to compare their performance, the 360 was designed over six years ago and still outperforms that cell phone by a huge margin.

Hey, I'm the one who was surprised when Nintendo didn't announce an updated console at this year's E3. I've long pushed that we'll see movement around the 2011-12 timeframe, but everyone else seems to have other ideas. And with the recent emphasis on Kinect/Move, it's hard to continue to disagree.

Kinect and Move are stop-gap measures to syphon off some of the casual market the Wii has monopolized. Everyone who's a "gamer" and into console gaming already has a 360 or a PS3 or both, so we have things like this and the new 360 Slim to sell more hardware and encourage software sales. If it's successful, don't be surprised to see Kinect built into or along side of, and sold with every console.
