I’ll just go ahead and say it: I don’t like Star Trek.

You know, TWOK was not universally loved by the fandom back in the day. So many complaints that they killed Spock and the way they killed him, that Starfleet was too militaristic, Khan was nothing like he was in "Space Seed". Only over time did it gain the respect it now holds. And it makes me laugh when I hear the new movie being derrided for not being the next TWOK. Given the way some of the stalwart fans are clamouring, I'd say it's EXACTLY like TWOK was received.

And, if you change the words "new alternate universe" with "new 24th Century generation show", and you have almost a word for word gripe fans had about TNG when it first hit the airways. "It's too different", "I'll never accept these new people like I did with the old show".

Facts are both TWOK and TNG were financial successes like this new movie. Both were then given a chance ultimately by most of the older fans, and even gained newer fans along the way. And this allowed for Trek to continue.

In the 80s, it was time for Trek to move on. Harve Bennett and Nick Meyer knew it for the movie franchise. Roddenberry, Gerrold and Fontana knew it for TV's TNG. And JJ and co. know it now. It took time for the old fans to catch on with that fact, but most of them ultimately.

And I'm sure most ultimately will again.

It makes you sound like an idiot because you're comparing the New Trek to the rest of Trek and calling it dumb. If it doesn't make you sound like an idiot then I must conclude that either you haven't seen anyother trek and just believe it is intellectual because of the rhetoric, or you genuinely believe that star trek in general is an intellectual pursuit. Its not.

I'm not saying the film is the greatest ever made, not saying you have to like it, but don't pretend its somehow inferior to everything else in the whole of the franchise because its styled differently. Even Python fans admit that most of Monty Python just isn't funny, doesn't make em love it less.

In summary, calling this film dumb in comparison to the others is like call McDonalds fine cuisine.

As for woman captains, have you not seen the series? Turn About intruder? Or is everything other than this film excempt from continuity errors. Captain Janeway is a canon violation don't ya know.

First off, I have been a Trek fan for twenty plus years and have seen every damn second of it ever put on film (or video, as the case was for Enterprise toward the end) so don't insult me for my Trek knowledge. It's you who I believe, as a person who truly believes this is the best Trek ever, has never truly understood Trek. In fact, I don't even think you're a fan at all. (That's my impression of you. See how stupid your comment was to go after my "Trek knowledge?" How would you even come to such a ridiculous conclusion based on the two exchanges on this board?)

The new movie is dumb because it's whole emphasis was on flash and style over substance. That's why it's dumb, as in mindless. I'm not looking for the dramatization of "A Brief History of Time" here but there are so many WTF and lack-of-common-sense moments in the film, it's hard to believe so many so-called Trek fans are so excited by it. I don't honestly think that EVERY SINGLE Trek film or episode is the epitome of high-class, intellectual entertainment. But after years and years of being into Trek and spending countless thousands of dollars on DVDs, movie tickets, memorabilia, books, etc., I think I have the right to speak my mind on the subject. And my opinion is, the film out now called "Star Trek," is moronic. Maybe most of the other films in the series were as well but Star Trek is not JUST a series of films. It was also five TV shows, countless books, websites, conventions, fans, etc., etc. You were aware of that, right?

And never once did I believe this new film to be somehow inferior to ALL previous incarnations of Trek. It's certainly better than Star Trek V. But only barely. Nor do I believe that Trek isn't entitled to continuity or canon violations. But to have so many non-sensical, anti-common-sense things happen in one movie seems ridiculous and over-the-top to me. If this were any other movie than one titled "Star Trek," I think the nerd-base would have ripped it apart by now.

Also, why do you keep jumping to such wild conclusions? I call one movie dumb and you instantly jump to me never having seen any other Trek or that somehow I think all of Trek is better than this one movie? Who sounds like an idiot now?

That's right. You.

P.S. The hammer is my...

I'll agree wholeheartedly with the original poster. I had very high hopes for this movie going into it. I was willing to accept a film that didn't totally fit into the canon (although I did feel kinda sucker-punched when BIG changes occurred, like Amanda's death & Vulcan getting destroyed).

But as it went on, all I witnessed was an action movie that wasn't particularly good. Kirk doesn't seem to have any kind of emotional arc. Spock has an arc but not particularly anything new or innovative. Nero is perhaps the most 1-dimensional villain in Star Trek history. The time travel feels arbitrary. None of the action scenes are particularly memorable and the film is shot with a lot of obnoxious shaky-cam (which surprised me since I thought Abrams did a really good job on Mission Impossible III).

Characters do things without providing a good context as to why. Why did McCoy feel so strongly about Kirk joining him on the mission that he smuggled him aboard by faking medical conditions? What gave Captain Pike such great faith in Kirk's talents that he made him acting first officer? Why did Spock maroon Kirk on an ice planet rather than simply throwing him in the brig? Why didn't anyone try to break up the fight between Kirk & Spock? Why didn't anyone else on Nero's crew have the good sense to realize that, "You know, 25 years is a long time to nurse a grudge. Maybe I should go warn Romulus about the nova, or at least, y'know, get a life!"?

I've felt really distressed by the fact that so many other people seem to so ecstatically love this film that I just can't see anything lovable about. But then, I guess I should remember that this isn't the first time that I've felt this way. I've been equally baffled by how many people seemed to enjoy Spider-Man 2, the Bourne films, and Casino Royale (although, Casino Royale IS a much easier film to sit through than Die Another Day or :shudder: Quantum of Solace).

It's good to see some sense returning to this message board, even if its' in the minority.

I predict a Star Wars episode effect eventually overtaking all the current hysteria, though the post high fall probably won't be as dramatic.

Rigth now most fans (and that included me for a short while) are just happy that someone has paid SOME attention to their neglected franchise.

Personally I'd rather have ST live on in syndication and rentals than to see another $150 million insult thrust upon us.

Many people, including the die-hard fans of TOS, thought TNG would never make it on tv and look what happened. Then many thought it wouldn't work as a movie series and look what happened. It just takes TIME to adjust and accept change. It happened with TNG and it WILL happen with the "new" crew. I am one that thought ENTERPRISE was not a very good series. I watched about half of the first season and stopped watching it. However, a few years after it was cancelled and it was eventually in syndication, I managed to catch a few episodes here and there and I began to enjoy it more than I did. I now have the entire series on DVD. The fact is, even though I thought it was a bad series, I found life in it that I didn't expect and the same can be said for this new movie and those after it. If you don't like it now, you will later. It's inevitable.

How do you know all this? You have said in another thread that you almost fell asleep?

I find it interesting that people on both sides of the fence tend to rate Karl Urban highly.

Personally, I think his performance was a horrible caricature.
Well we're all entitled to our opinions, but I think that Urban was the only one of the cast who nailed their role. McCoy is my favourite character from TOS, and I had no problem with how Urban played him, my only problem is that he wasn't in the film all that much. If they do a sequel it should just be him in a shuttle for two hours talking about something.

He's not as good as DeForest Kelly, but nobody can be.

I agree. I think it was spot-on. I'd always inferred that McCoy was something of a hellion as a younger guy, and I think the film's portrayal fits pretty well with the TOS background info on him. At least now his divorce is formally established, if only in the altered 'verse.

And I'm sure most ultimately will again.

I think this is a pretty good assessment. I recall reading comments made by Roddenberry from around the time that Phase II was being worked on (eventually evolving into TMP) that basically admitted that he knew Trek had to evolve to remain relevant for the modern audience - in this case the audience of the late 70s compared to the audience of the late 60s - and I do agree.

I think what we're seeing is only partly "old" fans reacting negatively to "new" Star Trek because it isn't what they're used to. I think part of it is a feeling that what we're seeing is not an evolution, as much as a lateral move. I can't fully disagree with this, but I'm optimistic that this fresh start has given Trek a good chance for new life. And, ultimately it's unfortunate but probably likely that some fans won't be interested in what "new" Trek has to offer.

Absolutely. Roddenberry realized that things had to change to adjust to the modern audience. I read somewhere that Roddenberry was also quoted as saying that after he passed on he hoped some young thing would take over and keep Star Trek big which is precisely what's going on right now. I completely respect the fans who dislike this new approach because we're all fans who love Star Trek, but things change and basically it's out with the old and in with the new.

I knew going into the theater that this was not going to be the Trek that I grew up with...

...I watched it twice opening night (Reg & IMAX)...

It's a Really WOW, movie... I had a fun 4 hours of entertainment...

I'll probably see it again and buy the DVD...

..but each time it ends, I'll think about the NuTrek that could have been...

...and will be a little Nostalgically Sad and a bit Curmudgeonly Dissapointed...

Actually, I'm just making fun of you. It's a dick move, I know, but it's fun and totally worth it.

See, when I said "It's my impression of you," what I meant was, "It's me pretending to act like and make fun of you." You apparently misinterpreted what I said. And I never said hardcore old Trek fans can't totally love the new movie. I just don't. Why do you like it so much? I have yet to hear that. Instead, you've just spent your time insulting me.

So...what say you, denizens of the Trek XI forum? Am I alone on this?

Yep, pretty much.

Those of us with a disssenting view are labelled "troll" & banned from the forum. The reason many of you don't know who I am is because I was banned from this board by mods with a god complex. Instead of banning the people who attacked me, they banned *ME* instead.

The only reason I returned was so I could gloat a little bit, and hopefully awaken some of you from your slumber.

I was watching Star Trek before many of you were even BORN, but yet I'm a troll? Go fuck yourselves.

Many of you, including some mods, don't even know what Trek is about, and therefore cannot fathom how royally JJ fucked this up.

If those of you with more than 2 brain cells would stop & think for a second, you might wonder why Paramount would give Star Trek to someone who in the past addmitted he *HATED* Trek.....

TO KIL IT.

Why wasn't Manny Coto, or someone who loved Trek given the job? The answer is so fucking obvious, a moron could figure it out with one hand tied behind his back.

TO KILL IT.

JJ is *ON RECORD* saying he hated Trek & was never a Trekker, but I'm a "troll" for pointing that out?

GO GET STUFFED!

But is it a good movie? Yes, it is. One of the best action movies I've seen in a long time, but it is *not* Trek.

Many will point to the huge sales that this movie has generated, but that's because it's a good action movie, not because it's Trek.

This movie *obliterates* any & all previous Treks, due to the actions of Nero. Billions on Vulcan alone have DIED. Many billions more will die due to the changing of the time line.

In this timeline, there will probably not be a TNG, DS9 or Voyager, simply because the people who shaped those events, many of whom were from Vulcan, now no longer EXIST.

Some of you might bring up the talk of a sequel......Don't bother. I've seen many movies that had higher grosses than this one, yet they got no sequel.

The memorable moments of Spock on his homeworld of Vulcan can now never happen, irrevocably changing Trek FOREVER.

A bunch of 20 somethings hopping around the galaxy blowing shit up is not Star Trek.

Not necessarily. At least with TNG, they weren't totally rewriting characters we already knew. It was all new, it was the future, it was different but was still part of the same universe and still basically Star Trek -- a true sequel. This kinda lame attempt at a reboot/reimagining/prequel just felt like Trek in name only. And yes, it's an alternate timeline and people keep saying the old one is still going on but that's not true. Why? Because they will never make another story take place in the "old" universe (and the books don't count). They wouldn't want to confuse the new fans NOR go "backwards." Instead, this is what Star Trek is from this point forward. Old Trek is dead and a lot of people who were very emotionally (and heck, monitarily) invested in it are angry. I do think that this direction is going to lose a lot of longtime fans. I know I'm more or less one of them. I also think it's a short term gain. I don't know if the "everyday people" that are paying to see NuTREK are going to be the ones that are still around forty years from now.

And for those that compare this to the fervor over NuBSG, NOT THE SAME THING AT ALL. Trek's had hundreds of hours of content and a fully realized universe. Old BSG had one season. ONE. Redoing that isn't quite as big a deal as totally reimagining Star Trek only five years after the last TNG movie. Should have waited ten or twenty more years. They waited 20 years before doing nuBSG!

Well I never said that. You went after my "Trek knowledge" for finding the new movie dumb. Which is my opinion and I stand by it. To me, it's no deeper than Wolverine or the last Die Hard movie. Over the top action for action's sake, logic be damned. That's just not what Trek is to me (and I believe, quite a few people).

And you called me an idiot. Twice.

Yes I did say that. Now it's your turn to drive to the store, buy a dictionary and learn the definition of the word 'almost'.
