Hulk Tempest Fugit=Brand New Day?

Chris227

Lieutenant Commander
Everybody complains about the Spider-Man retcon, but what about the Hulk one that previously occurred when Peter David returned to Hulk for a brief time? Revealing that pretty much a lot of previous continuity in volume 2 of Hulk didn't happen at all, but was a manipulation of the creature Nightmare (Who caused major problems for the Hulk around the time of the Secret Wars)?

Basically, it wiped out pretty much most of the Bruce Jones run, a run which proved to be a controversial one among fans and critics as it was mostly an update of the TV show-focusing more on Banner than the Hulk-with an X-files touch to it. It also ressurected Banner's wife Betty, as well as the Leader, who had previously 'died' at the end of Paul Jenkin's run.

David further changed elements in the Ultimate destruction comic, where the Abomination's appearence in the run was retconned and also in WWH Greg Pak declared Betty was still dead.

So how does this compare to Spider-man's retcon? While OMD/BND erased or rewrote much of the previous 20+ years of Spider-man continuity, some of it good, some of it bad....Hulk's was relatively minor and erased one mostly unpopular run. Also Spider-Man is of course a more popular character and hence more outcry, whereas Hulk, while well-known, isn't quite as popular.

Any thoughts?

I didn't know that this happened (Bruce Jones turned me off the book until Pak started, and I left the title when Hulk did), and I'm glad it did. To be honest, Jones' run was a giant mess.

Yup, that's the big difference here.

Jones' run was HORRIBLE (Opinion, yes, but I'm glad I'm not alone in this), and luckily, did not last a long time or have many far reaching consequences. So getting rid of that was more acceptable (Peter David also used his Captain Marvel series at the time to get rid of the VERY poorly done Absorbing Man arc in the Jones run, and did so in a fantastic way.)

Spider-Man, though, had the 20 years of history, the unmasking, the death of Harry, and now that that has been altered, it affects more than only his universe (not to mention 20 years of 4 comics a month, vs. the Hulk's 4 or so years of 1 comic a month).

However, I don't disagree with the reasons for the One Day More at all, even if the methods used were questionable.

^The sad truth with Brand New Day is, however, that a lot - not all - of the stories we've had are good, old fashioned Spider-Man stories. Okay, I am never going to be a fan of Kraven the Hunter and I'm certainly not going to be a fan of his daughter but other villains like Freak and Menace are entertaining additions to Spidey's rogues gallery.

^^^^
NO, BND has not been good ole fashioned Spidey stories. The stories we have been given are steroid enhanced exaggerations of what the EIC thinks he recalls of those ole fashion stories. Its a similar problem at DC and their Silver Age-itis.

BND Spidey sucks and sucks hard. Its not even the lame new villains as we've been introduced to those before. However, there villainy debuts were separated by actual character development that made sense to a character who had been evolving. The character interaction, sans with Robbie, is horrid and feels very forced. NWtD while a step up from the crap is still tainted by the Mephisto laden mess that has us where we are.

As for the OT Tempest Fugit I'll check it out. I've not read all of the Jones run but find it quite uneven. I'm currently reading it in trades.

I agree. Spider-man is fun again.

Can anyone tell me what is going on with the Hulk right now? In WWH, he was intelligent and spoke in complete sentences. In the latest issues of Hulk, he's talks like a toddler again. What gives?

^^^
It hasn't been explained yet (it might never be explained, really), but shifts in the Hulk's personality, even drastic ones like this, aren't uncommon.

WWH ended with Hulk using up all his energies to down Sentry and then getting fried by Stark's satellite. I'd say that qualifies for as good an explanation as any for allowing for a shift in which Hulk we're seeing now. :)
