Everybody complains about the Spider-Man retcon, but what about the Hulk one that previously occurred when Peter David returned to Hulk for a brief time? Revealing that pretty much a lot of previous continuity in volume 2 of Hulk didn't happen at all, but was a manipulation of the creature Nightmare (Who caused major problems for the Hulk around the time of the Secret Wars)?
Basically, it wiped out pretty much most of the Bruce Jones run, a run which proved to be a controversial one among fans and critics as it was mostly an update of the TV show-focusing more on Banner than the Hulk-with an X-files touch to it. It also ressurected Banner's wife Betty, as well as the Leader, who had previously 'died' at the end of Paul Jenkin's run.
David further changed elements in the Ultimate destruction comic, where the Abomination's appearence in the run was retconned and also in WWH Greg Pak declared Betty was still dead.
So how does this compare to Spider-man's retcon? While OMD/BND erased or rewrote much of the previous 20+ years of Spider-man continuity, some of it good, some of it bad....Hulk's was relatively minor and erased one mostly unpopular run. Also Spider-Man is of course a more popular character and hence more outcry, whereas Hulk, while well-known, isn't quite as popular.
Any thoughts?
