Both lauded and criticized by feminists of the era, the media icon convinced Hollywood starlets to reveal more of themselves on his pages than perhaps anywhere else. The interviews were great, too.
Hugh Hefner, who parlayed $8,000 in borrowed money in 1953 to create Playboy, the hot-button media empire renowned for a magazine enriched with naked women and intelligent interviews just as revealing, died in Los Angeles at the Playboy Mansion of natural causes on Wednesday. He was 91.

Rest in peace, Hugh. You were a controversial figure, but you left one hell of an impression.

As an adolescent in the 70s... there is so much to be thankful for.

Came for the gorgeous women (a loaded phrase!), but really ended up reading the articles, there was some great journalism and stories in it.

Natural causes is somewhat ambiguous but at 91 I doubt he was up to much (even with blue pill power) to have gone out any other way.

He lived a full life for sure.

He will be in death as he was in life...Stiff :p

Wow, Hugh Hefner is dead. He's one of those people you figured would live forever. It's sad to see another cultural icon of the Civil Rights, Women's Lib, and Sexual Revolution Era go away. Sadder to think he had to go out seeing the world mired in such a Conservative Dark Age.

RIP, Hef. :(

He certainly was an interesting figure in American culture. Cheers to the man who was getting some action even in his twilight years, something 40-something virgins could only dream of.
