'Howard The Duck' on dvd

While his company produced it Lucas was not the "creative" force behind Howard the Duck. It was produced by Lucasfilm as a favor to its director Willard Huyck. Who was the screenwriter of American Graffiti.

Also during this period George Lucas foresaw Lucasfilm becoming a large production company. An umbrella imprint for various filmmakers to release their films under. Similar to how most other studios and production companies are. But the experience with Howard the Duck changed that. Since then the only films and tv series produced by Lucasfilm are those which originated with Lucas himself.

Ya know, it wasn't actually a bad movie at all, but the character of Howard was just TOTALLY wrong. They just recreated him from scratch to appeal to youngsters. In the comic, I always pictured him being played by Robert Blake in his early 40s, bitter and drunk.

Never read the comic, how long did it run?

The main HTD comic ran from 1976 to 1979. 31 issues, mostly written by Steve Gerber, who created Howard in another comic in 1973. Then there was a black and white comic magazine that only lasted a few issues, and Gerber wasn't involved with that. Howard has appeared in quite a few other comics over the years, including some attempts at reviving his comic.

The original HTD comic series is very much of the 1970s. If you were discovering underground comix like Freak Bros and Wonder Warthog and watching Saturday Night Live with Belushi, Aykroyd, Murray, etc and still reading regular Marvel comics, Howard the Duck was right up your alley. (I started reading it with issue 16, the famous Deadline Doom issue). The movie just doesn't capture any of that at all.
