How'd I do it?

Adapt Tom DeHaven's excellent lit novel, It's Superman.

Little problem with that for a movie trying to appeal to the masses: Superman (and I mean, Superman in costume doing Superman things) doesn't really appear until the quarter of the book.

I always loved Superman: Birthright. I think that would make a great basis for the next film, if they were going the complete reboot route. That graphic novel covered the origins but in an exciting and fresh way. It wasn't chronological like Donner's Superman, and we really got things from Clark's perspective. He already knew of his Kryptonian heritage as the story began, so really the story just started pushing forward from the very beginning. I also thought they nailed the Superman/Luthor dynamic.

On a side note, I'm surprised WB hasn't gotten Geoff Johns to consult or write an outline or something for the Supes flick; he's doing the same for The Flash and Green Lantern for WB. Maybe they haven't quite figured out the direction of the franchise just yet...

I like the super-powered villain thing, but I'd really want to keep Lex Luthor in there, and I really do think Kevin Spacey is the guy to go to for that. I'd say he's a talented enough actor to play Luthor in any manner the script may require.

Everything from Superman 2 on should never have happened.

Mario Puzo the writer of The Godfather wrote the story for Superman: The Movie and Superman II. How could they top that? The next two movies were bound to suck in comparison. :rommie:

Actually, Puzos credit was undeserved. Most or all of the good stuff in those movies was the work of Tom Mankiewicz. Puzo's take on the material was more in line with the Adam West version of Batman - very campy and jokey. For example, it incuded 'hilarious' scenes, like Superman chasing Lex Luthor, then seeing a bald head in the crowds below. He flies down, grabs him, only for Telly 'Kojak' Savalas to turn round and say 'Who Loves ya, baby?' Side-splitting, I'm sure you'll agree. Fortunately, Mankiewicz had a much more respectful approach to Superman.

Why are people always wanting to put Lex in every single movie?! I know he's the arch-nemesis but he's just a human and there are plenty of other enemies.

Hire J.J Abrams

Keep Krypton intact( to really shake up the fan bases ;) )

Have Superman witness the destruction of Krypton at the end of the movie. That way it gives the destruction more of an impact

Has anyone read the book Superman vs. Hollywood? Does it have much to say about Superman Returns?

I have, and yeah, it talks about RETURNS toward the end. It's been awhile so all I really remember is the very end of the book had Dick Donner and Tom Manciwez sitting the audience for the premeire and Tom says to Donner "If I had told you 30 years ago, that we'd be sitting here now....", and Donner replies "I'd have had you committed.".

It almost seems in the comics that Lex has evolved from being only Superman's main baddie to being a core member of Superman's supporting cast of characters which also includes (but doesn't limit itself to) Lois Lane, Perry White, and Jimmy Olsen.

That is because everyone that touches Superman thinks like that and that holds the character down. That is what keeps Supes from reaching his full potential. How many average folks can name top Superman villians? I remember folks here saying that no one had the power to challenge Supes on a physcial level.

Remember that JJ Abrams already did a Superman reboot script for when McG was still attached to the project. While there were interesting elements it was just too radical for anyone to accept. In the script Lex Luthor turned out to be an alien spy...

Lex Luthor doesn't have to have a main role, in my first movie Lex would only be a supporting character who is later contacted by Brainiac. To a general audience who may not know that much about Superman, Lex Luthor is probably known as his greatest enemies. It's not like Batman where he has a lot of popular rouges. He does have rouges yes but not everyone knows them all and can recall them on pat.

But whose fault is that? What other villians have they been exposed to that they would remember? As has been said, Luthor has been made a supporting cast member of Superman which is just crazy. It is like it is some anime or cartoon. He might as well be Shredder or Skeletor .

I don't see anything wrong with Luthor being a part of the supporting cast. I think that having Luthor around wouldn't be detrimental to any movie project.

If anything, having him there, but not as the main villain could do a lot of good. Average movie-goers would see Luthor have have something familiar, but could still be exposed to other villains that get used.

If they do reboot Superman, I would keep Luthor in a secondary role. Not as a main villain, but just the guy that is a continual pain in the butt that can contribute/assist the main villain and/or hinder Supes.

Think Harry Osborne in Spider-Man 2. He was an antagonist, but he wasn't the all-out bad guy giving Spidey problems.

^ Yep...that is how I would use him. Have him as this shadow figure that Superman knows is around and that can strike at any time and be just as dangerous, if not more so than any of his super powered foes. I am agreeing with you too galactus, we need to see his other vilans and let others know that we're not reduced to showing Luthor, Brainiac, and Zod. I would like to see Metallo used. I am curious about his use in the Superman Returns video game and am looking forward to seeing him in Smallville.

I would do a complete reboot, like Batman Begins and Bond.

However, I would not give the origin story as the main story, but do it like The Hulk and have the origin (from Reeve's film) told through the opening credits.

For the story itself, I would have a real hard-hitting story, like Superman facing off against Luthor as the latter tries to get into the White House through nefarious means that only our hero knows about. Of course no one believes Superman and he is forced to officially hang up his cape as Luthor becomes US President - it's not always a happy ending.

The sequel would have Superman deciding to screw orders and reveal the devious bastard's schemes, letting the people remove Luthor from office, with Superman's help.

How many average folks can name top Superman villians?

I can consistently name only three: Luthor, Metallo and Mr. Mxyzptlk.

Well four: Bizzaro, but I wouldn't make him the sole villain.

Sole villain? I'd pick Metallo.

For average folks, it's probably: Luthor, Zod, and then maybe Bizarro. Metallo and Brainiac (other than the term itself) probably isn't even on their radar.

Personally, I'd love to see the Birthright idea of Lex building a Bizarro to fight Superman.

Metallo is too much of a Terminator ripoff, and I've never found either of the Brainiacs to be all that interesting (it's basically just an excuse to have Supes fighting a bunch of giant robots, which isn't enough of a reason for me).
