The Orville is obviously inspired pretty heavily by Star Trek, and that got me wondering, how would you feel if we got it as an actual official Trek series? We would keep everything the same, the characters, the writing, the humor, but we would just change some of the names. So we would have the Federation and Starfleet instead of The Union, Bortus would be a Klingon, and..... I'm not sure what Alara would be.
Personally, I would still love it, and I'd probably even put it above Enterprise and Discovery (so far) in my Trek series ranking.
I don't think the humor would ruin it. Trek did a lot of humorous episodes over the years, and this would just be a step up from that. If it can go darker with DS9 and DSC, then I don't see why it couldn't go in the other direction with something like The Orville.

Well Bortas would need to stay his current species, since Klingons don't lay eggs and have females.

Because of what Seth has professed to doing, it by definition can't be official Trek, so the question is moot. But I'm definitely a fan!

I like that we have a lighter show on that I can actually see. It reminds me of why I loved growing up in the 90s.

Orville is making me disappointed CBS didn't go with a MacFarlane produced Trek series instead of Discovery. On the other hand, the fact it's not Star Trek is definitely giving Orville a lot more freedom.
People would be complaining, saying it's not Star Trek because it's too light and humorous!
Penis jokes go against Gene's Vision!!!!!

I'd like it the same that I do now.

I wouldn't. Can't fire first, no emotion on the bridge when doing something great, no snark between officers, the Prime Directive. :barf:

I'm very happy The Orville is off doing its own thing. Building its own universe and legacy.

Right, I would love to see the reaction to "dog licking its balls" in the viewscreen entered in canon.

Wouldn't work as a Trek series, the fact that it exists so close, yet just outside of Trek is what makes it refreshing. We would be back to TNG season one, with stuffy Picard and his overblown sense of superiority.

It could be a decent Star Trek series with the same actors and slightly upgraded effects. However, they would need to cut down somewhat on the less serious parts.

Still it works fine the way it is. Not better than Trek, but a fine alternative.

I don't mind the humour, it's the stupid stuff about penises and dogs' balls that annoys me.

Oh, that's supposed to be funny too? Really? Are you sure? Feels more like some of the stupid crap Ron Moore did in Galactica to show he could do what Star Trek never would. Important things like a doctor smoking cigarettes in a sickbay ward, or a lawyer talking about taking a dump.

I wouldn't like it as Star Trek, because there would be just as many complaints about it not fitting in to continuity as any other series.

I would rather see science fiction showing exploring its own thing, rather than trying to keep making more of the same.
