How would Barclay have fared if he'd really ended up on Voyager?

The problem with Reg Barclay is his obsessive compulsive disorder, which
prevents him from any social life (only Troi & the Doctor, a hologram, seem able to approach him, what is a few). Plus, he could end to endanger the crew, even
unconsciously because he doesn't know how and when to stop, when he is
persuaded to reach his goal or at least, to be on the good way. Trying too hard to do well can be dangerous for oneself and/or for others. But except that, I agree that Reg Barclay is a good guy.

Tilly's anxiety is mild as it gets compared to Barclay's.

It's very questionable how Barlcay could have completed Starfleet Academy. He'd have finished his Kobayashi Maru hiding in a Jefferies tube somewhere.

Wasn't it implied that Barclay was a good starfleet officer before the Enterprise-D because the ships he'd served on before didn't have holodecks? Seems the unlimited access to galaxy class holodecks were the source of his hedonistic escapism. Riker noted he had a "history of secluded tendencies" at Starfleet Academy. I guess they are pretty nosy at the Academy.

PICARD: "There's every indication he's served competently in Starfleet for years. His ratings aboard the Zhukov were satisfactory. In fact I recall Captain Gleason speaking quite highly of him before his transfer." - TNG Hollow Pursuits

My impression was that they said whatever they had to in order to get rid of him.

We don't know if every student has to do that test. Perhaps just those that go for a command track. Why would engineering students need to take it, for example?

In my mind only command students take it during the academy. That explains the bridge officer test Troi had to take in TNG to be able to start doing bridge watches.

On the other hand, probably all Starfleet academy entrants would have to take that psychology assessment Wesley dreaded so much. I'm curious how Barclay scraped through that. Or would they have analysed him correctly, that he would have/develop major problems but still eventually turn out as a fine Starfleet officer?

It was implied that he was transferred from ship to ship because nobody wanted to deal with him.

It's implied that after Hollow Pursuits he starts to really work on his social anxiety problems and with the help of Geordi and Troi becomes somewhat functionally social. And by the time he shows up in Voyager (And his appearance in the future in Endgame) we see him getting better and better in social situations.

He'd replace Kim at Ops within a week...two on the outside...leaving the poor ensign belowdecks scrubbing plasma conduits and co-hosting "Breakfast with Neelix".

Truly a fate worse than death for Kim.

If Janeway didn't throw him in the brig for disobeying orders like he did in Pathfinder, he would be curled up in a fetal position by the time B'Elanna got through with him.

True on both sides but Barclay would surely eventually found a way to counteract B'Elena's temperament in entering her favor or in creating a holo Torres program in charge ‎to protect him from the true B'elena's mood swings! ;-)

Barclay would have done a good job on Voyager. When I first read this thread, I almost wish that he had been on the ship.

The fact that Reg chose to be with them in his holo fantasies kind of speaks for him wanting to fit in with them if he had had the chance.

RIKER: In retrospect, I wonder if Captain Gleason wasn't 'buttering our bread' a little. He knew we were looking for a diagnostic engineer. I've examined Barclay's psychological profile. He's a history of seclusive tendencies. It was noted at the Academy more than once.
PICARD: And yet he chose this way of life. He has made the same commitment to Starfleet that we all have.

Geez, Barclay's social credit score is weak! I wonder how he ended up with such a nice apartment, let alone being allowed to own a cat.

Barcalay would have constantly been pitching theories to get the ship home.

Hmmm.... 99% of them clearly too far-fetched, causing the senior staff to have to curb his enthousiasm a lot of times, making him very much a laughing stock on the ship (just like on the Enterprise), 1% has potential but fails due to unforeseen circumstances or side effects. But towards the end of Voyager's 7 season run, he finally comes up with the idea that does get them home, making him one of the great heroes of the crew.

I think that would have worked for me :)
