It's the OP here. Thanks for your responses.

But man, what was I thinking? I've written dumb things here before, but I now realize this made me look really stupid.

It's *obvious* it will be one of three things:

1. Star Trek 2
2. Star Trek: [subtitle]
3. [other title] — least likely

The only reason we refer to the new film as STXI, ST09, etc., is because it had no subtitle or anything to distinguish it from the franchise as a whole. We rarely refer to Generations--Nemesis as anything but their subtitles (ie, not, eg, STVII or STVIII).

It will be *no problem* referring to the next movie, for whatever it is, it won't be simply Star Trek. We'll call it by its name.

Sorry. I really was asking one of the dumbest questions ever. There will be no confusion next time (unless it's called "The Wrath of Khan" etc.)

I'm hopeful that JJ Abrams will do the same thing George Lucas did with Star Wars when he added The New Hope or TNH to the title of his first movie. If only as a gift the the fans.

This movie, along with the sequel to "The Dark Knight" are the two that drive me crazy trying to imagine what they could possibly be called. I just can't imagine what it could be called that would sound cool. I felt the same way after "Batman Begins"...I could have never guessed the real title, I was predicting something like "Batman: Escalation" (based on one of the last lines of "Batman Begins"). Since what they came up with was so perfect, I could see the Star Trek sequel being named similarly.

I still think the most likely name for the Star Trek sequel is something without those words in the title, like "The Dark Knight", but related to Star Trek. As stated previously, my best guess is "The Starship Enterprise". I'm also wondering what the Spiderman re-boot might be called. Maybe they'll go the Hulk route and call it "The Amazing Spider-Man"?

I think whoever said a number and/or the original title plus a ":" can be helpful makes a good point, even if those titles can sound clunky. I had no idea that the "A Shot in the Dark" was the first sequel to "The Pink Panther" (I assumed "Return of the Pink Panther" was) or that "Magnum Force" was the first sequel to "Dirty Harry" until someone pointed that out to me.

Hmmm, I'd imagine it'll probably have a subtitle. I think at this point, it's just listed as Star Trek (Untitled sequal). Or we could just refer to it as Star Trek 2012 since that's when it's slated to come out.

Personally, I think "Star Trek" will still be in the title, but in small letters. It'll be marketed solely by what comes underneath it in big letters, however, IMO...

Exactly. They stopped numbering the TREK movies as far back as GENERATIONS. They'll just give this one a subtitle: STAR TREK: RED MATTER or whatever.

The Blu-rays and latest DVD re-releases have roman numerals on the cover art for whatever reason.

Is it true that some Trekkies were actually angry that they dropped the roman numerals? I read it somewhere but never found any confirmation. Though considering some of the posts I've read on this site, it wouldn't surprise me now.

Trekkies never miss an opportunity to bitch about something so I think someone somewhere is hates the new movie because it didn't have a number in the title.

In all seriousness I'm hoping they use an epithet associated with the series along the lines of "The Dark Knight" and now "The Man of Steel". If they really want to get brownie points they could have the title relate to the film's premise: i.e. "Strange New Worlds" would be more of a planetary romance and be appropriately epic while "To Boldly Go" might be more introspective and involve Kirk facing a seemingly impossible challenge which has defeated many before him.

For fan discussion use, we will by common usage eventually settle on a consensus as to some form of shorthand that differentiates between the old and new movies. Previously we had ST-III, ST-VI, ST-V, etc maybe now we'll refer to nuTrek1, nuTrek2, nuTrek3 and so on...?

Since Trek fandom thrives on almost religious obsession, I propose following the convention used for books of the Bible.

So Wrath of Khan would be 1 Star Trek 2.
The new one would be 2 Star Trek 2.

Or use chapter and verse numbering to have Trek 1:2 (Khan) and Trek 2:2 (new).

Obviously movie titles ideally need to be relatively short and snappy in order to achieve maximum recognition and discussion value once a movie is released but, from the Trek back-catalog (depending on the story of the movies) these might work:

The first and last are probably the most recognisable to the general public and they will either not know or not care that WNMHGB was the title of the second TV pilot for TOS.

Given Nimoy's reading of the classic monolog at the end of the last movie then WNOHGB might just work...

Before that, sequels had actual titles like THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN or TARZAN FINDS A SON or MA AND PA KETTLE GO TO HAWAII or whatever. To be honest, I kind of miss those days. To my mind, ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES is more fun (and memorable) than PLANET OF THE APES III: THE ESCAPE.

Two great posts here, my money would be on some combination of the two concepts here.

Though if we see too much sequel decay, we might start seeing such gems as "I'm a Doctor, Not Another Star Trek Sequel" or "Star Trek Sequels are a Russian Inwention"
