I'd rather have Layton as my dictator. Wouldn't you? I don't know how far Lorca would go as a dictator and think he would be more likely to lose his objectivity while trying to achieve his objectives.

Um, I'd rather have NEITHER. That said, I agree with others that at least Lorca is (as he sees it) trying to end a war - on the actual battlefield. Leyton spent a lot of time co-opting a premier Star Fleet Cadet squad - and somehow felt that using the tried and terue Federation republic/democratic method when in all honesty there was a climate of fear - but - unlike in the declared war situation of ST: D - no real threat of imminent invasion<--- That was all a self serving justification/rationalization made by Layton himself to convince himself it was okay to kill line serving Star Fleet officers for "the greater good".

The entire alpha quadrant was at stake in Layton's case. Killing a few officers might have been for the greater good from his point of view. And Sisko talked him into surrendering rather than try to start a civil war over it. Layton was calculated and expected a smoother transition of power with little to no bloodshed but gave up when he saw that wasn't going to happen. He meant well. I don't trust Lorca though. He would make a better villian than Layton

The point was that Discovery is more villainous than other trek series to the point where I'm re-evaluating other trek villains as not really so bad anymore.
