How Well Do Quake and Quake 2 Work on Vista?

Thinking of downloading the Quake package from Steam for some nostalgic blasting, but looking for advice on how well Quake 1 and 2 run on Vista. Do you need Doxbox to get Q1 going, and are there any techy issues to worry about? Not very technically minded so don't fancy setting anything too complicated up. Any advice gratefully received.
