How Well Did "Voyages of Imagination" & "Ships of the Line" Sell?

Dayton3

I was impressed with "Voyages of Imagination" by Jeff Ayers (the reference guide to all the Trek novels written).

And "Ships of the Line" was pretty good too with more imaginative artwork than I anticipated.

I was wondering if any followups to either book is planned?

A "Voyages of Imagination" follow on that looked at Trek Comic Book Fiction would be interesting.

We'll never know. Pocket book does not release sales numbers to the best of my knowledge.

A simple "it exceeded expectations", "it met expectations", or "it failed to meet our expectations" would probably answer the question.

Not sure about VOI, but Ship of the Line sold out its print run almost instantly. It was very successful.

I've been thinking a 'Guide to Star Trek Graphic Novel Characters' would be an interesting thing to do, now that I have all the comics. I might do scans and post them to Memory Beta . . .

Personally, I'd rather have one about the novel characters. Especially if an artist was hired so we could get images of more of the characters, who have never been on a cover. I'd especially like ones for Titan, and Vanguard myself.

Okay, I'll third that vote for a book on characters from novels. It would be fun to see all our favorites like Mac Calhoun or the SCE... sorry, CE crew.

I have, and enjoyed, both books very much.

Quick question about SOTL while on the subject, I've never bought the calendears until this years one, so I wondered if the book contains ALL the images from previous calendars up to that point, or whether it was more of a "best of" collection?

A while ago, Marco said there were tentative plans for an online resource along those lines, but I don't think projected numbers supported the costs of a physical book. This kind of thing has to compete with free resources such as "Memory Beta", and as more original characters and aliens turn up on the cover art of novels so MB continues to grow.

Several times, the readers have suggested a coffee table "best of" art book of novel covers but that isn't possible for numerous reasons.

I haven't gone through and ticked them all off, but it seems to be very comprehensive. And the (longish) captions are all-new.

An online resource would be great, been to Memory Beta many times. I know there are many here who would still rather hold a "dead tree" in their hands but the way these types of books sell, and I am a BIG fan of the Star Charts, Tech. Manuals, etc., online would likely be a better place for it.

I'm really enjoying VOI. Always fun to break it out after finishing up a classic novel to get the author's thoughts/insights.

I pitched an idea for a book like this years ago but there was little interest; I think the problem of sourcing images and rights from a dozen different comicbook companies kinda scuppered it.

^^But GITCorp is releasing a DVD-ROM collection of all pre-2005 Trek comics in October, reportedly encompassing everything including the elusive newspaper comic strips. So they were able to get those rights together. I wonder if that would make it easier to get those permissions for a book. Although I'm inclined to doubt it, given the way contract law tends to work.

Allyn conjectured the copyright problems probably became easier for an electronic resource because that medium, more than likely, wasn't specified in early contracts.

I suspect that once the DVD-ROM collection comes out later this year, Memory Beta will get a lot more character pictures posted, as it will be that much easier to screencap them off the disc as opposed to putting vintage comics into a scanner. (I know my paranoid-collector side feels much safer about the former than the latter...)
