How to move furniture?

So my parents have probably sold their house, and are giving me the option to take some of their stuff from them.

The biggest snag is that I live 5+ hours/300 miles from them.

The only significant item of interest in this equation is a coffee table, as anything else I can shove into my Honda Civic.

Uhaul's base cost for a 10' truck is $300, which is vaguely horrifying to me (read: it's not -essential- that I have this coffee table, it would just be nice).

FedEx Freight looks like it would cost half as much, though I imagine we'd have to find a way to put the table into a box for shipping.

Anyone have experience with moving furniture that could offer recommendations?

Following my Dad's philosophy of moving things, there's nothing that can't be strapped to the roof and through the back windows. Tables, Christmas trees, bikes, ghostbusting equipment, Aunt Edna, Mitt Romney's dog, whatever.
 
How about renting a cargo van from Enterprise? That can run you as low as $30 for one day. I rented a van to buy some bookshelves and other bulky items from the nearest Ikea (about 300 miles away) and was able to make the trip there and back again in a day.

Even if the van ends up costing $60, you're doing way better than with any of the other options. I've had some really good experiences with Enterprise, both with personal and work stuff. Last November, I rented a van to pick of a collection of manuscripts (about 70 document boxes) for work. The van handled well and the price was pretty reasonable.
 
My experience with moving furniture consists of sitting in the truck bed of my dad's pickup while holding on to associated large items and being tossed about like Eddie Murphy in the opening car chase scene of Beverly Hills Cop.

I honestly don't know how disassemble'able the table is. Things to ask the folks about.

ETA: Enterprise is a no-go. Not available in my locations of interest (leaving 10598, arriving in 05401). But thanks anyway!

How about a small uhaul trailer?

Do you have a friend who owns a pickup truck or station wagon?

Uhaul/Budget also rents F-150s/Silverados instead of box trucks. Have you checked into these?
 
AFAIK none of my friends have appropriate vehicles unfortunately.

It looks to me like the cheapest Uhaul truck option is $300, which is more than I'm willing to pay just to move a coffee table.

That said, a trailer might be $125, though I'd have to pay to get a hitch rig for my car as well...no idea how much that costs.

Not seeing anything about an F-150/Silverado, unless that's the same as the trailer options...

I'm admittedly a bit nervous about the idea of doing a Uhaul, only because to date the largest thing I've ever driven is an Isuzu Trooper.
 
A potential issue with that is that we then still need to deal with getting it to/from the bus/train station. That said, thanks for the idea...I did a little bit of looking into it yesterday, but at this point I think my parents need to give me more specific information regarding the table's dimensions and whether there's any options for disassembling it.
 
Stuff like this is reason number two why we need to invent the transporter.

Now, for the serious answer: Do you have a friend with a pickup who's willing to drive 600 miles? If so, offer to buy that person lunch or dinner for his trouble, as well as paying for the gas used.

ETA: Oops. Beaten to it. Oh well.

I think you're doing it wrong (or I'm misunderstanding). You live in VT, the stuff is in NY, yes? May not want to do a one-way rental, but that's not a big deal. You have to GET to NY somehow, right? Rent the truck (or van) in VT, drive to NY, get the stuff, drive home.

I tried a couple locations right around your area, and had trucks for like $75 after tax, cargo van for about $130. Unlimited miles. So just go get it locally, drive down and get your stuff, drop at your place, then return car.

Not saying Enterprise is the answer, should obviously shop around a little, but it did come right up when looking...
 
This is why cars have roofs! (Shouldn't that be rooves??)

Seriously though, once you find out more information about the table, it may be possible to strap it on/in/around your car somehow. I've certainly seen worse flying down the freeway at 90 mph...
