I'll be there for 6 days, and now that I'm done packing, I can not fathom how some people "live out of a backpack/suitcase".

I'm with you on this. I hate it. Business trips are a packing pain in the ass because you need 3 sets of clothes (business, schmoozing and casual) AND enough variety to present a different enough outfit at each business/schmooze setting.

The key is picking highly versatile background items (suits, shirts, trousers, etc) that can double-up without people noticing, take enough accessories to add the variety (ties, pocket squares, shoes) and remember that hotel laundry is your friend when it comes to shirts, underwear, etc (but NEVER give them anything really expensive).

For a 6 day business trip (assuming business meetings requiring suits during the day, a handful of more casual business schmoozy events in the evenings, and a few more casual nights out), a minimal rotation would include:

2 suits - versatile dark solids or subtle stripe
2 pairs of dressy trousers - any of dark grey, navy, black, olive, light grey or tan (pick one light, one dark).
3 shirts - white, sky blue, pale pink. Pick solids with some textural interest rather than memorable bold stripes. Hotel laundry will let you last 6 days.
2 pairs of shoes - black oxfords & brown monkstraps (but see below)
3 sets of underwear & socks - hotel laundry will let you last 6 days.
6 ties - if you need to wear a suit every day, you'll need them. Conservative & versatile patterns - rep stripes, pindots, etc. Maybe one less conservative & memorable one that's still tasteful one.
3 or 4 pocket squares - one white linen, the other two or three chosen to complement any of the jacket/shirt/tie combos you're packing.
1 sweatervest - navy
2 belts or 2 pairs of braces depending on what suits/trousers you have.
toiletries (obviously, don't take anything the hotel provides, and if you're really stuck for space and don't mind the cost, don't take anything that can easily/quickly be bought locally on arrival instead).
pyjamas
laptop
phone charger (for 6 days, you'll need it, if you make enough calls. Shorter trips you don't need it)
any work-related junk
phone, wallet & keys & nice rollerball pen (leave behind any unnecessary cards/keys/etc)
camera if you're a shutter-bug (charge it up before travelling, so you don't need the adapter)
passport & tickets

You should be able to fit all that into one folding-suit-carrier type luggage, and one carry-on bag. Job done.

For travelling there and back, you can wear jeans, smart loafers, a versatile sportcoat, plus a oxford button-down collar cotton or chambray shirt, and anything else needed for the weather when you get to Chicago (for 6 days, you can get away with a single overcoat/hat/gloves/scarf combo, though it's painful). The jeans, loafers and sportcoat give you extra options to mix/match with the other items in your luggage when you get there, so you actually have 3 pairs of shoes in total (enough for 6 days of business wear if you're careful with the choices).

If you have room left over - add more shirts/underwear/socks to avoid laundry costs and if you still have more room after that (possible), add in a pair of dark brown oxford shoes or another suit.

How I would pack for a 6-Day business trip:

6 Dress Shirts
3 Undershirts/"wife beaters"
3 Pairs of Dress Slacks
6 Casual Shirts
1 Tie
2 Pairs of casual pants/khakis*
1 Pair of Jeans.*
6 Pairs of dress socks.
6 Pairs of gym/casual socks.*
4 Pair of underwear.
1 Pair of casual shoes.*
1 Pair of dress shoes.
Depending on predicted weather an approraite coat. But my leather jacket works pretty well in most cool conditions is likely all I would bring unless bittter cold/snow is predicted in which case I'd use my winter coat with gloves.
Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant.)
Grooming (comb, razor.)
(All other toiletries -soap, shampoo will be provided by the hotel.)
Medication
Laptop with charger and ethernet cable.
Watch, Wallet, Keys

*Items depending on if I've plans to hang out in casual situations outside of the company-related events.

And, honestly, I think that's a little on the heavy side of what I would bring. I could probably make half as many dress shirts work provided they don't get messed up too bad I could get two days out of one. The only need for 6 casual shirts would be to prevent having "reruns" in my wardrobe when out and about. I could probably even likely make my socks last twice as long in a situation like this and -if I'm really pressed for saving on my packing- one pair of underpants.

I don't really have "winter clothes" and "summer clothes" I just have clothes. I've a couple long-sleeved shirts but most of my shirts are short-sleeved and they suffice for me in all weather conditions and, as suggested, light clothes or heavy clothes and coat would all depend on predicted weather.

If you're going to be living out of a suitcase for the better part of a week, honeslty, you're going to have to make some sacrafices as you can only bring a finite number of clothes. So you're either going to have to suffer with getting a couple more days out of your undies than your normally would or maybe wearing a short-sleeved shirt in colder conditons than you were expecting.

It's either that or you pack two suitcases to be gone for a week.

I'm a medium-light packer. If I can wash or dryclean on location I do that. Where I tend to overpack is in my carry on. I like to have a couple books, a portable DVD player, a laptop bag, pen and paper, my work camera, etc etc.

Just been to too many boring conferences. :D

All I've posted easily fits into 2 bags - one full-sized carry-on & one folding-suit type bag.

To be honest, once you've gone beyond the "carry-on only" stage (which you will do on anything more than a 2 day trip if you need jackets/suits), it doesn't really matter how big/heavy the suitcase is (provided you're not paying a penalty fine) so you might as well load it up.

PS. those of you suggesting using underwear or shirts or socks multiple days? That's pretty rank. OK, shirts, I can just about buy doing that, if you've only worn it a couple of hours, but otherwise stop being so cheap and just use the hotel laundry!

The Hold is wise (and natty). Listen to The Hold.

Haha, that's the one thing I can never understand. I love me some fashionable attires, but I'm not really a shoe guy.

I'll agree with that for underwear and socks. It's not like they take up a lot of space, so bring enough.

I refuse on principle to check luggage. As a high level elite flyer, it doesn't cost me anything but the time saved by not waiting for my luggage is worth it to me.

I can do about 4 days in a carry on comfortably, but I don't have the interim clothes between business and casual. If I want to dress down, I take the tie off for dinner or drinks.

QFT

One thing I always overpack on is underwear/socks and at least one extra shirt for the inevitable overnight travel delay.

Yeah, I hate checking stuff in too, but 6 days is just too much. I could stretch to 3 or 4 days I guess without checking luggage in if I really pared stuff down and as you do, avoided the intermediate formality clothes.

That makes a big difference - not taking those items means you can wipe off the dress trousers, the brown monkstraps & the odd jacket. I'd still take the sweatervest because some conference halls are absolutel freezing with too much air-conditioning and wearing it under the suit hacket helps a lot.

If you don't mind wearing a suit on the plane, then you can be even more ruthless with what you take. Having said that, I don't advise this. Even if you can manage to get your jacket hung up in a crew locker so it doesn't crease, you're still liable to spill something on your trousers and then the whole suit is out of commission until you get it dry-cleaned. And the hotel dry-cleaners are inevitably awful.

When I travel, it's usually not to conferences but to individual offices in an area so a different dynamic there. When my day's done, it's off to a nice dinner and then the hotel for some relaxation.

I will wear a suit on the plane, on the routes I fly I got upgraded to first about 85% of the time so my suit coat was hung up.

If I have to get something cleaned while I'm on a trip, I'll ask someone who I'm meeting where they get their clothes cleaned. I can get same day service usually at a much cheaper price and I've based it on a trusted referral.

There are still times I come back from a trip and will unpack something that I didn't wear.

^ That kills me when it happens. I do the same thing with the dry cleaner, I've even had coworkers drop it off for me on occasion.

I always think I'm a heavy packer, until I get to the airport and see people with bags twice the size of mine. What I take with me varies, depending on the season.

For a 1 weeks trip, I would take a medium size hard top bag (as they get thrown around a lot and I don't want broken toiletries), and I like everything to stay dry if it rains. No carry on for me, not even a handbag. I don't like hefting about a trillion things. I usually have room to come back with extras, too. I normally stick my jacket in the bag when I arrive at the airport too, so I don't have to worry about it's whereabouts on the plane. And put it back on after I collect my bag again. I like to be unencumbered. :D

OP, you couldn't possibly have time to wear all those things!

6 undershirts
2 longsleeved undershirts
7 underpants
7 wife-beaters (aka a-shirts)
9 pairs of socks
2 pairs denim
3 pairs of slacks
1 pair of pajama pants
4 pairs of shoes
6 short-sleeved shirts
2 jackets
1 zip-up sweater
3 ties
5 dress shirts
2 vests
2 belts
2 hats

I don't even think I own that many clothes!

Light packer here.

I have a sort of Grrr Animal wardrobe with mix & match separates. I use the hotel toiletries...use the hotel laundry...and clotheslines to rinse things.

Yikes, that's a lot. Four pairs of shoes!? I don't think I even OWN four pairs of shoes!

I am a light packer and very good at organizing things so that they magically fit into small spaces.

I will list the stuff I brought along for a week long cruise last year (7 full days). There were two "formal nights." Then I will compare it with what my sister brought....

6 T-shirts
1 pair of shorts
1 pair of jeans (I also wore one going there)
7 pairs of socks
7 pairs of underwear
1 extra bra
1 dress
1 skirt
1 fancy shirt
1 pair of dress shoes
1 set of pajamas
1 extra sweatshirt (wore one there)
Toothbrush
Hairbrush
Razor

Basically, one outfit for each day, plus what I needed for the formal dinners. Nothing more was necessary. I didn't pack casual shoes because I just used the ones I wore there (they are brown and I wear them with everything, every day). All of this fit into a small rolly-backpack type thing.

My sister, on the other hand, could not understand this concept of packing "one outfit a day." She packed something like 20 shirts because she "wasn't sure what her mood would be that day." Ridiculous! When you are at home with your giant closet of clothes than sure, you have that luxury of dressing by your moods, but when you are limited in the clothes you can bring, there is no reason that you can't choose your outfits ahead of time. She also brought extra formal clothes because she wasn't sure which dress she would want to wear...that takes up a lot of extra space. And of course all the shoes...

It's just not necessary. You have to make sacrifices like this when you travel. You have to wear the same clothes during the day that you do to the club (maybe just changing the shirt). Though honestly for me it's not even a sacrifice since I wear jeans and a T-shirt every day, no matter where I go. Very rarely do I go somewhere that requires more dressing up than that.

I'm a terrible over packer. I can pack a moderate sized rolling suitcase for a weekend getaway. I overthink it way too much and only end up wearing 25% of what I brought.
