They're right that the Emperor's wording is pretty preposterous in Empire Strikes Back - it's entirely a device to tell Darth Vader that Luke is his son while not telling the audience that Darth Vader is the father (and one of many hints, and discussions, of Luke's father sprinkled liberally throughout the movie).
