How stuffed is your computer?

I have two laptops. The only things attached to either are power cords and mice, and on occasion my printer or my iPod.

Just not much of a geek, I guess. :)

... and a CD exploded in the other, forcing me to clean out all the pieces...
:wtf: How does a CD explode?

Flaws in some CD-ROM drives meant that certain CDs that remain slightly imperfect can and do explode when spinning in the drive, causing much damage. Our computers in University were at risk of it at one point, so the whole bally lot of them had to be replaced.

Once I switched exclusively to laptops back in 97 my days of opening the computer ended. Now I just run what I've got.

'97!?

Wow. The first laptop I could tolerate was in 2002 and I didn't actually LIKE laptops until 2006!
I was a software engineer frequently on site performing upgrades, fixing things, doing demos, etc. The laptop was a Godsend. The first one I used for those kinds of things was a Toshiba 3100 back in 1987, but that was an office machine and not for my exclusive use.

My desktop is pretty stuffed. I have 3 hard drives, 2 DVD drives, the video card and a wireless card all in there. The case itself is pretty large but the power supply has alot of unused cables just dangling about :lol:

Have just a laptop and an old PC. Since I got the laptop, I haven't used the PC since sometime last year. Plus I'm too lazy to open the PC up now.

I'm not sure, but I've had it happen too!

It sounds like a gunshot and you get pieces of CD embedded in weird places in your computer.

It's similar to how a tornado can drive a piece of straw through a tree. Of course, this was in old home-made PC back in the 90's...god only knows what material it was made out of. Probably something cheap.
Probably some kind of RIAA protection, lol.

Mine just had some coffee, a sandwich, and a bunch of doughnuts, so it's pretty stuffed right now. Maybe a snack later.

For a thin piece of plastic, they are made to spin very fast. This creates massive centrifugal forces.

CD "burst" speed | actual speed | RPM | centrifugal 'G' force | The disk is essentially supporting this much weight.
---------------------------------------------------------
1x speed == 1x == 200rpm == 2.5 G == 40 grams
2x speed == 1.5x == 300rpm == 6 G == 90 grams
4x speed == 2x == 400rpm == 10 G == 150 grams
8x speed == 5x == 1000rpm == 66 G == 990 grams
16x speed == 8x == 1600rpm == 170 G == 2.6 kilograms
32x speed == 12x == 2400rpm == 380 G == 5.7 kilograms
40x speed == 16x == 3200rpm == 680 G == 10 kilograms
52x speed == 20x == 4000rpm == 1100 G == 16 kilograms

It shows how much strain the disks are under in high speed optical drives.

edit: silly mistake corrected :bolian:

How 'stuffed' is your computer cabinet? (I'm not talking about netbooks, laptops or macs, obviously, as those tend to be packed full anyway), how many (physical) HDDs do you have internally?
Two graphics cards, DVD writer, a SATA controller card, and eight HDDs.

There are cables everywhere. :eek:

^ I believe some people use flexible conduits to bundle their cables together. They're often used in case mods.

Speaking of which, does anybody here have an aesthetically modified / custom made computer case?

Heh, I have this big ol' IKEA metal cupboard that I've been wanting to build a passive water cooled PC into for the last couple of computers of mine :rommie:
(With a TOS-style control panel on top (lots of blinking lights))

You should do this.

You can give us updates and photos each week, and we can help you to design it, by giving advice and encouragement. :)

I could have done this easily a few years back - but I know ab-so-lutely nothing about the hardware of today! I would depend heavily on the good will of, yes!, you nice people of the TBBS and the nice people in my friendly neighbourhood computer store (but they are big Windows fans :( )

Still hoping I'll be able to do this someday though :)

What sort of panel did you have in mind? Something like the helm that is wide and low? Or something like the stations around the walls of the bridge, that are upright?

Something like this (sorry, an entry of mine from an old avatar contest):

But with temperature readout(s), there-are-four-lights-modem-lights and USB-hub/CD-card reader (although that's already dated, huh?) and that sort instead of just 'blinking lamps'.

You know the design, the gizmo was used all over the place -even upside-down (and wall-mounted) in the engine room :rommie:

I've got an old Mac G4 that I've never cracked open. For all I know, Osama bin Laden could be hiding in there.

You wouldnt think that the area at the back of the computer would be so full of wires and things

I know at the back of my computer area it is farly clean it is maintained and cleaned every few months

But when you get under the desk which is next to the computer it is dark and cramped place to get into with all the wires cords.

My tower is on the ground because there is not much space.

I have been told it should be on the bench but that includes the printer pens lamp ect.
