As I admitted in the other thread, I might be wrong to say it's not an "embargo" but there is a general misdirection being floated about that no one is being allowed to see it until it's aired. This is not true.

No, there's not. Pretty much everyone is aware of preview screenings happening on the 19th.

That's exactly was a review embargo is. Critics get to see it on Tuesday, they're not allowed to release their review until after the episode airs on Sunday night.

A review embargo is a request or requirement by a source that the information or news provided by that source not be published until a certain date or certain conditions have been met. The Discovery reviews are under embargo.

Yeah. It's a "review embargo". That forbids reviews. Not screenings. In fact, this way it's kind of genious. Becaus everyone who wants to have a review when it airs (aka the regular "reviewers" that are invited to those screenings), now aren't even allowed to say something like "this looks uninspired" or anything in advance, because that would make them vulnerable to lawsuits alleging they violated said embargo.

I don't know that they're trying to suppress anything other than spoilers. But it doesn't look good.

Now, to be fair - they also know that, regardless of the quality of the show, Trekkies on the Internet will be setting their hair on fire and screaming bloody murder over whatever revisionism they perceive in the initial episodes.

"They Killed Star Trek! Bastards!" headlines from the rage-click sites are absolutely certain unless the pilot turns out to star a miraculous resurrection of thirty-seven year-old William Shatner reading the preamble to the U.S. Constitution on the western back lot of some L.A. studio.

Now, having expressed my reservations on the embargo date, it could very well turn out to be nothing. There are cases of embargoes being lifted on release day and the product was reviewed positively.. Discovery could be one of those cases, we won't know until the 24th. It's just that I'm always skeptical because the majority of the time embargoes are held that late when the publisher, studio or whomever, doesn't have a lot of faith that the reviews will benefit them. There are exceptions, but they are just that, exceptions.

I hope I'm wrong because I've been craving a good Star Trek series for a while now, but my expectations have been tempered by this.

Oh my god, the level of over-reaction in this thread is off the scale. I'm not surprised, as it's really par for the course for Star Trek fans, but it's kind of funny watching people going in circles about every minor thing that supposedly substantiates that the show will suck. It almost comes across as people wanting it to fail. Personally, I'm still as excited as ever about the new show. Can't wait for the pilot!

Yep. I think what bothers me is they have no problem with David Mack gushing about the show while an embargo on reviews is in place.

Makes it feel like they aren't sure what reviewers are going to think of it.

What about Martin Scorsese's Silence? It turned out to be glorious, or at least that's what all the critics said once they got to see it.

I'm excited about new Star Trek. The trailers haven't done anything to excite me beyond that.
