ugh... literally every single new thing coming out about STD is making me want to hate this show. Now the lead actor is confirming that it's going to be shitty/gritty with a dragged on story. We already knew this, but it's like she's proud of it. There's also a quote where she says it's similar in spirit to that zombie show she was on. I keep hoping that they will release something, anything positive, but there's literally nothing. I may not subscribe to CBS Access out of principle if the pilot is as bad as everything suggests it will be.

It's gut-wrenching to watch the creation of this show unfold. I have been watching old episodes of TNG and DS9 on Hulu lately, and it's more than a little depressing to think those days are so far behind us. This show will be a complete miss, and I agree with another poster here who said that the failure of this project may discourage investment in another Star Trek project.

I'm watching the second season of TOS at the moment, it's been about two years since I watched it, and Im amazed how entertaining this show is, not for any nostalgic reason, because I was born decades after it came out, but just because it's such a high quality show. Star Trek is great at being itself, the only reason they're making this mess is laziness and disregard for the show's legacy.

It's been about 15-20 years since I have seen some of these DS9 and TNG episodes, so it's like watching some of them for the first time again. I hope this new Trek series bombs quickly. The less of it they make, the less damage they do to the franchise.

This idea that Nick Meyer is working on a Star Trek series running parallel to Discovery seems really delusional to me. I guess the likelihood of that happening equals zero.

You win the prize for the most out there posts all week.
"Out there?" I don't see what makes my posts "out there" at all. There is quite a bit of very real disdain for STD.

I'll grant you that. But hoping that the series bombs? Come on, how discontented and resentful can one be?

I didn't particularly care to much for Star Trek Beyond, but I didn't think it was so bad that it damaged the brand. I didn't root for it's failure. Discovery is a completely different situation. Discovery is so far off the mark and such a lazy attempt inserting non-cannon into the saga, that I think it damages the foundation that was laid before it.

TOS in it's day WAS edgy, and occasionally dealt with themes that society was uncomfortable with. It was designed as a 'more adult' science fiction program in its day too,

TNG from day one was designed as 'Family Friendly' and often (not always, but WAY more than TOS ever did) dumbed down issues to the point there always the RIGHT side (pontificated by Picard at some point and them held up by the rest of the cast eventually) and a wrong side. They took a few more risks with DS9 but overall the 24th century era Star Trek was often just your average 1980ies TV drama; with the background of a spaceship. It was overly preachy and often boring (IMO).

That they want to move away from that and also move into edgier territory again has me excited for a new Star trek series in a way I haven't been in a long time. YMMV.

examples please?

I've yet to see anything like that happening.
I think it is plain as day...
  • Klingons that do not resemble any Klingons we have seen before
  • Overall design that is very far removed from TOS (Enterprise and the new movies did a better job of walking that line and making the design what we would expect)
The different uniform edge colors for different duties, and the darker Harry Mudd incarnation are nitpicking, but the more non-cannon that adds up in this show, the more it makes a difference.

I don't see any of those being deal breaking as they're just visual changes.

Canon to me is the story.

Are you talking about Discovery or TMP?
I agree that TMP was awful. In fact, the only TOS movies I liked were WOK and TUC. But, I also didn't think they were this bad.

I see it as being more than a visual change. None of it fits. I will watch the first episode out of curiosity, but it is definitely a deal-breaker for me.

I posted his In another Discovery thread.

"No one was asking for a complete aesthetics copy cat. But they didn't even try. For example...Would it have hurt to have uniforms similar to the cage costumes? Maybe updated a bit like nuTreks take on Tos uniforms? All Star Wars movies (yes even the prequels) had a believable design/aesthetics lineage. Rogue One did an excellent job recreating sets, props from A New Hope with subtle updates that complemented the original designs.(yavin base for instance had some more design elements/textures etc. But it all seems to fit)
Star Trek just seems so disjointed in it's visual design across series and movies. It does not flow believably.

I'm usually not a stickler for visual continuity but it seems like All Star Trek production teams go out of their way to make things look massively different from what preceded it. I will say that when Many Coto got on Star Trek Enterprise some design elements like the winky/Blinky lights on the bridge and a slightly updated TOS ship made it into the show..."
