How 'Pen Pals' sucks - let me count the ways...

Granted, it’s been a while since I’ve seen this episode but I felt that it was time for a little TNG bashing (I love TNG, but it’s fun to do it every now and then). Since someone already took a stab at 'Code of Honor' (the only other truly bad episode in TNG’s run in my opinion), I thought I’d start a thread on this particularly poorly-written story…

1. How Data behaves – he doesn’t act like an android at all and he disobeys orders all over the place!

2. How Picard reacts to Data’s behavior – he shows annoyance and nothing more; essentially, he tolerates Data’s disobeying orders and the Prime Directive. Nothing about “I’ll be noting this in your permanent record” or anything to that effect (at least as far as I remember).

3. Picard having a conference about what to do – this was the point when I realized how badly this episode was written – having a discussion is the last thing you would do – the Prime Directive already makes it clear what you are supposed to do and it was written so every crew wouldn’t have to sit down and have this kind of debate when something like this came up! It makes absolutely no sense. By acting this way, Picard's giving the crew the impression that he's open to discussion on such matters.

4. Picard’s awareness of the continued errors he’s making – he keeps having that little in-joke with Riker about how bad the situation is getting but seems resigned to the idea that there's anything he can do. Hey Picard – here’s an idea – your rank is CAPTAIN! DO something! (like putting Data in the brig for a while!)

Sure, I’m exaggerating a little bit how I feel toward this story but it does make me wonder – did the writers have any idea of Trek and this crew at all? Looking at Memory Alpha, I was surprised to see that both the writers to this story had worked on previous and subsequent stories – I realize this was a season two episode and all, but why did they still get this episode so wrong?

Is this the one with the weird little alien girl? I haven't seen it since the original BBC2 TX.

I watched this one recently. It's not the worst episode (I didn't count it in the bottom 5), but it's pretty terrible. I sort of feel like in a lot of TNG episodes it seems like Data obviously has feelings, and this was one of the stand out examples.

Plus, you're right. Why did the crew debate about what to do? The prime directive doesn't have clauses that exempt cute little girls.

In my opinion since she grew up to look totally spankable I like to forgive the sillier parts of this episode.

As far as we know. ;)

Pen Pals was bad, yes, but it wasn't by far the worse (Genesis, anyone?). However, it does highlight one of the few things about TNG that I've always hated, namely:

Data does something wrong. The crew has to figure a way out of the mess that Data created. Data helps save the day, therfore, nothing ever happens to him.

The more I watch my TNG DVD's, the more I see of this, and it really irriates me. That entire crew should have been court marshalled over and over again.

In Pen Pals, Data breaks the Prime Directive, plain and simple. It irriates me, but overall, the episode is "eh"

(sorry about my rant....)

One of the five worst? Not by a long shot in my opinion. I can think of five from the first season alone that are worse than this one. While it wasn't that great, it also wasn't nearly bad enough to be in the five worst list.

Just my two cents. :)

I actually found it an interesting pov for a planetary disaster the the "mighty Federation" keeping their hands off approach.

I liked this episode. For one, big, reason.

When things became dirty and moral issues where in the air, the senior staff sat down and discussed the situation, namely whether or not break the Prime Directive.

That, to me, is more what the show is (or should've) been about and what Starfleet should be about. Not going out there, holier than thou, saying "do not interfere with the natural development of a planet." If they can, as they decided, save the planet without the inhabitants knowing about superior or other life then all-else be dammed DO IT.

It's what I like to call the "Prime Suggestion," and this episode executed it PERFECTLY.

That one scene, that one thread in this episode, makes it a good one in my book.

Data and playing with the little girl is kind of silly. ;)

There IS one thing that bugs me in this episode, in the aformentioned scene, Data goes over to a console to do something and "accidently" turns on the little girl's transmission. Pretty damn manipulative for an Android.

"Let me just re-set the clock here... "
"Data? Are you there? I need help!"
"Oops! How did THAT happen?"

One could make the argument that part of the point of this episode is the fact that while the Prime Directive sounds great in theory, it has real consequences to real people, and sometimes we humans can't accept standing by and doing nothing. Therefore, while the Prime Directive might say you do nothing and there's no need to talk about it, sometimes you'll still sit down and have a conference and say "is it worth throwing out the Prime Directive and facing the consequences in this case to do what we feel is right?"

Despite the noble message of when it is and isn't right to interfere with cultures, this episode was just simply hella-bad.

This is one of my favourite TNG eps, nothing wrong with it at all. Specially the meetings between Riker and Picard where he says he's in it up to his neck :)

Or the Mentakans (sp)?

Given that they're two of my favourite episodes, id have to say "yes! much worse!"
But I voted 'no' in the poll. TNG's had some stinkers, and I don't think Pen Pals' is worse than Shades of Grey, Masks, Inheritance, The Child, Samaritan Snare, Cost of Living, or Manage á Troi.
