They broke those "rules" very early on and never looked back.
I don't know. We're talking entertainment properties here, not vital resources.
I remember fans fearing that Marvel was going to be "Disney-ized" when Disney bought Marvel.
Hasn't affected the comics or the movies one bit.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought CBS was the only one who had merchandising for the franchise, even on the reboot films, which are Paramount's. Of course CBS seems to more merchandise the original cast than the reboot cast. There seems to be a conflict of interest in this regard.

No, I'll gladly maintain the current Trek status quo so long as we don't get a dozen fans hired on as a consultant group to co-ordinate the tie-ins and shows and movies into one cohesive continuity. Still can't believe Disney actually thinks that's a good idea for Star Wars.
Exactly. There's nothing wrong with a Star Trek action film, it's when the franchise is dumbed down to target the Marvel/Transformers/Fast & Furious audiences that it loses its own identity.
Trek has a nerd aura surrounding its name, and its never going to break box-office records like Star Wars or Avengers movies, no matter how much mindless action and explosions are thrown in. Trek is different than those franchises, and trying to change it now for money purposes won't work. Interstellar is proof that the Trek films of old can still make a lot of money today, if they have good characters, writing, acting, directing, etc.
I don't expect or want another TMP out of Beyond, but I do expect a better mix of the challenging and insightful Trek with action adventure Trek. In fact, the best Trek movies have been a mix of both these elements, as going all-in with one does not provide the best results more often than not.
Yes, if they had made the mistake listen to the fans back in the 1960's, they would have give Leonard Nimoy more prominence in the stories and more camera time.

I don't know. Most fan films I've seen and most fan fiction I've read have been pretty shitty.
Everyone is a fan except the original authors. For example, Star Wars is now fanfic without Lucas's involvement. The next Star Trek film was written by a deeply involved fan. Perhaps your distinction is amateur versus professional where only the budget and rights really make the difference, because there are professional participants in the fan Star Trek productions. Oh, by the way, did you see Fantastic 4? It was fully written, directed, produced, released and shown by professionals with rights to the property. LOL.
I didn't see Fantastic Four, no. And the issues with that film have been well-documented, however I was perfectly happy with the 2005 film on its own merits.
The point I was making was that not all fans are talented writers or filmmakers. I'd wager my dollars on a professional who knows how to use a pair of sticks, lock down a shot, edit with proper pacing and energy a film or episode from a script that's been written and revised by another someone who both know what they're doing than watching another shitty fan film that just meanders along with poor characterization, sloppy editing, and an emphasis on pew pew pew visual effects than on story.
The fan films that are, objectively, production, story and performance-wise, better than something like "Spock's Brain" or "Threshold" can be counted on one hand. And you don't even need all five fingers to do so.

Since everything worked out so much better than that, it's pretty clear that Roddenberry was right.
If they had listened to 'Star fans', I can think of several series in that 'chain' that probably wouldn't exist. Going by fanzines, TWOK also would have been aborted months before it's release.

Also - pretty certain fans weren't the major factor that resulted in TMP. I thought 'Star Wars' and the TOS reruns attracting newbies and casual viewers convinced the studio that the dreaded 'unwashed masses' might be interested in a big-budget Trek film.
