How old was Susan in the Original Season One?

I was listening to"There be Monsters" with Carol Anne Ford voicing the inner turmoil and delight about whether if Ian and Barbara were pets when she said the most astonishing thing: "They haven't figured out yet than I'm older than the both of them put together" which is an interesting concept I haven't thought about in YEARS...

How old was she really?

Speaking as one who considers just TV episodes as "official canon", it's never been stated that Susan wasn't the age Ian or Barbara thought she was. Of course, I've only seen about 5 of the 10 First Doctor stories with Susan plus The Five Doctors so I could be wrong about this. It's an interesting theory that does have some possibility since the Doctor himself is way older than he looks.

But... assuming she's a Time Lord, in view of what's come since season one, it would make sense if she's the equivalent of 16, which could well be closer to 100 or so, to judge by the Doctor's comment about being 'just a kid ' at 70, Romana's first incarnation looking about 28 at 130, and Romana's comment in Pirate Planet about being given an aircar for her - can't remember, but it was 70, 80-odd - birthday, as if it's like a teenage girl getting a pony, or getting a first car when you turn old enough to drive.

I think people are taking the "just a kid at 90" comment too literally. I mean, I'm more than happy to refer to college freshmen as being just kids, even though they're all legal adults.

It all depends on how long the Tardis was travelling before they reached 1963. If the Doctor left Gallifrey with Susan (or whatever her Timelord name was, assuming her mother was Gallifreyan - always wondered how she got the name Susan) decades earlier then she would be older, however she did have a certain naivity that comes with a teenager.

The description of running away in a clapped out old TARDIS the doctor used at the bum end of the 5 Doctors didn't describe the presence of the Master, Susan or the Stellar manipulator which can't have been acquired to destroy Skaro unless both the Doctor and Susan were playing it quite close to the chest in the Mutants... Which has me wonder if the whole little girl innocent role she adopted wasn't completely a... Ace was 16 and and she was mixing Nitro Nine to blow stuff up, Rose was 18 and acted more mature and on top of even the worst situations for the most part than Polly and Joe was in her 20s but acted like she as 9 years old.

I also like the idea that that Galifreyans have trouble getting their heads around how tiny a human life span is that they have some trouble not accepting that a human who seems to be in his 400s is really only 22.

It's been awhile since I've seen the fan reconstruction of Marco Polo, but didn't she say that to Marco Polo (or one his companions)? If that's the case, I don't think she was going to tell them her real age.

If Ian and Barbara couldn't handle the truth, then in most of their other adventures Susan would have been burnt as a witch for insisting that she was in her 70s or older.

Officially women didn't even have souls until the 18th century, and even then that's only white woman. Humans are a cowardly and superstitious lot hwo get violent when you tell them that they are wrong.
